He Saved A Dog But Let His Wife’s Father Die Chapter 04

I glanced at Ava. She stood behind him, her eyes wide and glistening with practiced vulnerability. Joseph shielded her from me, as though I were some dangerous threat.

I let out a quiet laugh. “Joseph, what part of my statement was incorrect? This is a matter between husband and wife. What does it have to do with a coworker?”

I let the word hang in the air, sharp and deliberate.

Joseph hesitated, unable to find a reply.

I pulled my wrist free and walked straight for the doorway, never looking back.

His voice, thick with restrained anger, followed me out. “Camilla! Don’t you dare walk out of here without apologizing!”

I didn’t slow my pace until I was outside.

Cool night air washed over me, clearing the heavy knot in my chest.

A sudden clarity washed over me: once I crossed this threshold, nothing would bind me to him anymore.

Back home, I printed out divorce papers. They would be filed by next Saturday.

I stayed awake all night, packing my belongings. Keeping my hands busy was the only way to quiet the hollow ache in my chest.

By the time I finished sorting everything, sunlight flooded the rooms. I grabbed the divorce agreement and drove to the Military Hospital.

Five years of marriage, reduced to a few thin sheets of paper. It felt absurdly weightless.

It was lunch break. I headed straight for Joseph’s office and knocked.

The door opened to reveal Ava.

She stood squarely in the doorway and lowered her voice. “Joseph pulled an overnight shift, and did rounds all morning. He only just got a chance to rest. What do you need?”

I stared at her.

Her hair was messy, her uniform wrinkled. Behind her lay Joseph’s office.

A wave of nausea rolled through my stomach.

I tightened my grip on the folder in my hands and forced myself to look away. “I need him to sign some documents.”

Ava glanced at the folder in my grasp and smiled faintly. “He’s exhausted; he barely gets an hour of rest. It’s cruel to wake him. Why don’t you leave them with me? I’ll pass them along once he wakes up.”

I almost refused. But at that moment, I couldn’t bear to face Joseph at all.

I handed the folder over. “Thank you.”

I turned and walked down the corridor. Images kept replaying in my mind: her inside his office, the two of them spending their lunch break together in that intimate space.

It looked so natural, so comfortable, as if that space belonged to them both.

The nausea grew worse. I rushed into the restroom, clutching the sink as my body racked with dry heaves.

My vision swam. Everything went dark, and I collapsed.
