He Divorced Me Six Years Ago Without Me Knowing Chapter 17

Julian looked at the undisguised disgust in her eyes, and it felt as if someone had driven a knife straight into his chest.

In truth, the day he posted the clarification, he had wanted to leave for Southport to find her.

But he was afraid of seeing the disgust in her eyes. He was afraid of hearing the ice in her voice. Julian had thought that since Sophia had said she would come back to sue him, he would wait.

He would wait for her to come back. He would wait for her to collect every debt he owed her.

Maybe, after she had finally vented all her anger, they could start over.

But that fragile hope shattered completely today.

Still, Julian refused to give up.

He drank in Sophia’s face with desperate longing, his voice so hoarse it barely sounded like him. “Sophia, can we start over?”

“I know I was wrong. This time, I swear I’ll treat you right. And your grandmother, too. I had someone buy her a burial plot. Would you… would you go see it with me?”

After he said that, he fixed his gaze on Sophia’s face like a prisoner waiting for his sentence.

Sophia only let out a scornful laugh. “Julian, I honestly don’t know how you can even say that to me.”

Her eyes were colder than ice. “Do you think posting a clarification and admitting to everything in court can

erase all the damage you did to me?”

Julian opened his mouth, but not a single sound came out. His tall frame seemed to lose all strength,

swaying as if he might collapse.

“Ethan has already helped me choose a burial plot for my grandmother in Southport.”

Sophia went on, “Julian, if you have even a shred of conscience left, if you feel even the slightest bit sorry for what you did to me, then never show up in front of me again.”

She turned her face away, her voice filled with revulsion. “Because seeing you makes me sick.”

The moment she said that, Julian felt something inside his heart break.

Sophia hated him that much?

She actually said seeing him made her sick.

Julian clutched his chest and doubled over. The sharp pain seemed to spread from his heart through every part of him, making it almost impossible to breathe.

But Sophia had already turned, gotten into the car, and driven away without looking back.

In that moment, Julian wanted to chase after her.

But every word Sophia had just said pinned him in place like nails.

Suddenly, he could no longer take a single step.

After that day, Julian locked himself inside the home he had once shared with Sophia and drank nonstop.

The curtains were drawn tight, shutting out all light until day and night became impossible to tell apart. Empty bottles were scattered all over the living room.

Then he received the news that the reporters from The Riverton Daily, the ones who had indirectly caused Sophia’s grandmother’s death, had each been sentenced to three years in prison.

Only then did Julian set down the bottle. He stared blankly at the news, like a drowning man who had finally broken through the surface and taken one breath of air.

The next day, he showered, shaved, and changed into a clean suit.

Julian thought that so many days had passed. Would Sophia be a little less angry now?

Would she forgive him?

He tugged at the corners of his mouth in the mirror, then left home full of hope and anxiety, ready to head to

the airport.

But the moment he stepped outside, a black sedan suddenly came speeding out and slammed straight into

him.

Blood spread beneath him, and Julian’s consciousness began to fade little by little.

Just then, Claire suddenly appeared in his blurred vision.

She lowered her head, patted his face, and laughed through her tears. Her features were twisted almost beyond recognition. “Julian, this is all your fault. You made me a slut in everyone’s eyes. If I have to suffer, then you can die, too.”

Julian opened his mouth, but no sound came out. Blood poured wildly from the corner of his lips.

As he looked at Claire’s deranged face, his heart was filled with endless regret.

He should never have taken care of her out of old affection.

He should never have tricked Sophia into signing those divorce papers for Claire’s sake.

In the final moments of his life, Julian only wanted to see Sophia one more time.

Even if it was only from far away.

But he no longer had that chance.

In the end, Julian slowly closed his eyes, filled with unwillingness and regret.

By the time news of Julian’s death reached Sophia, two weeks had already passed.

A mutual friend told her that Claire had been convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Sophia held the phone and listened to everything, but her heart did not stir at all.

After hanging up, she went alone to her grandmother’s grave and quietly lit three small memorial candles.

Thin curls of smoke rose, then drifted away with Sophia’s whispered words.

“Grandma, rest in peace. Everyone who hurt us has finally gotten what they deserved.”

Another spring came, and through sheer ability, Sophia had become one of Southport’s top litigators.

After finishing a difficult case, she turned and looked out the window. The sunlight was perfect.

Her bright, brilliant life still stretched far ahead of her.
