He Divorced Me Six Years Ago Without Me Knowing Chapter 07

“I haven’t seen that child.”

Sophia curled her lips in a mocking smile, her voice hoarse.

“Still denying it?”

Julian’s grip on her arm tightened. The force was so great it felt as if he were about to crush her bones.

“We had just seen you, and then the child disappeared. How could there be such a coincidence?”

Sophia moved her lips, but before she could speak, she saw Claire rush in with the police.

Claire’s eyes were red. The moment she entered, she pointed at Sophia and said through gritted teeth, “Officers, she’s the one who took my son. You have to interrogate her thoroughly.”

After saying that, she threw herself into Julian’s arms and sobbed.

Julian patted her back soothingly, but his gaze stabbed coldly toward Sophia. “Sophia, I’ll give you one last chance. Where is the child?”

Sophia weakly shook her head. Every word hurt so badly it felt like it was tearing her apart. “I… haven’t seen that child.”

“It looks like you won’t admit it until you’re cornered.”

Julian roughly dragged Sophia out of bed and shoved her toward the police. “Then go explain yourself at the detention center.”

The moment Sophia staggered onto the floor, a sharp pain shot through her lower abdomen like an electric current.

Her legs trembled so badly she could barely stand. Cold sweat broke out across her forehead, and her face was as pale as paper.

But Julian only frowned when he saw her like that, his tone full of impatience. “Sophia, stop pretending. Isn’t it just your period? Do you really have to act like you’re seriously ill?”

Then he turned to the police and said, “Officers, please take her away as soon as possible. You have to make her tell you where my son is.”

Cold handcuffs locked around Sophia’s wrists. With one officer on each side, she was escorted through the long hospital corridor.

The early spring wind blew warm air into her thin hospital gown, yet it felt unbearably cold.

Sophia had thought that once she reached the detention center and explained everything, she would be fine.

She voluntarily gave them the passcode to her phone and told them to check her call records and location history.

But after the questioning ended, she was not released. Instead, she was pushed into a pitch-black holding cell.

The moment the metal door closed, darkness and the smell of mildew rushed over her.

Sophia felt her way to the wall and sat down. She curled into herself and buried her face in her knees, but waves of stabbing pain kept rising from her lower abdomen.

After an unknown amount of time, the metal door finally opened. Two men in plain clothes walked in and, without a word, struck her with the batons in their hands.

“Are you carrying out some kind of illegal punishment?”

Sophia let out a muffled groan, her voice terrifyingly hoarse.

One of the men smiled. “Someone told us to take good care of you.”

Take good care of her?

Sophia curled up on the floor in pain, her eyes reddening.

Was it not enough for Julian to send her to the detention center? Did he really have to torture her like this too?

Meanwhile, Julian received news that the child had been found.

The culprit was a man Julian had once sentenced to a long prison term. After being released, the man had held a grudge and had been waiting for a chance to take revenge.

That day at the hospital, he happened to see Julian and Claire bringing the child in for an appointment. When they were not paying attention, he kidnapped the boy.

The boy had been hidden in an abandoned warehouse in the suburbs. Other than being frightened, he was not seriously hurt.

After bringing the child back, Julian originally intended to bail Sophia out.

But Claire tugged at his sleeve with reddened eyes. “Honey, our son was terrified and he keeps crying. Come with us to the hospital for a full checkup first. Ms. Bennett’s situation isn’t urgent.”

Julian looked at Claire and the child and thought that since the child had already been found, surely nothing would happen to Sophia at the detention center.

So he put Sophia out of his mind without concern. It was not until three days later that he finally went to the detention center to pick her up.

Sophia was still wearing that hospital gown. There was not a trace of color in her face, and her legs trembled uncontrollably when she walked.

Julian quickly stepped forward to support her and briefly explained what had happened.

He had thought that after hearing it, Sophia would cry and make a scene, blaming him for not trusting her and for not bailing her out right away.

But Sophia was frighteningly calm, like still, lifeless water.

For some reason, a sudden wave of panic rose in Julian’s chest.

His gaze swept over her miserable state, and his voice softened slightly. “Sophia, what happened to you at the detention center these past few days? Why do you look so weak?”

Before he could say more, his phone began ringing urgently.

Claire was sobbing on the other end of the line. “Honey, our son suddenly has a high fever. Come back and take us to the hospital.”

Julian’s expression changed. He no longer spared Sophia another thought and hurriedly said, “Sophia, go home by yourself.”

Then he quickly got into his car and sped away.

Sophia stood where she was, staring blankly in the direction his car had disappeared. A mocking smile tugged at her lips.

Julian did not know that she would never go home again.

After Sophia retrieved her grandmother’s urn from the hospital, she went straight to the airport.

When the plane rose into the clouds, she closed her eyes and let out a soft breath.

Julian, I hope we never cross paths again.
