He Divorced Me Six Years Ago Without Me Knowing Chapter 06

After Sophia finished listening to the voice memo, she suddenly could not even cry.

She did not accept the money. She only held the urn with her grandmother’s ashes and walked out step by step.

Cars rushed past her along the road, and pedestrians hurried by.

But Sophia no longer knew where she was supposed to go. She simply walked aimlessly, crossing one street after another.

A sudden wave of dizziness hit her. Before Sophia could even reach out to steady herself, her knees gave way.

At the moment she collapsed, the last thing she saw was a cluster of flower buds in the landscaping, not yet fully bloomed.

Spring was almost here, but she seemed to be trapped in winter forever.

When Sophia woke again, she was already in the hospital.

She stared blankly for a few seconds. Then, as if suddenly remembering something, she threw back the blanket and got out of bed.

The IV needle was yanked out with the force of her movement. Blood ran down the back of her hand and dripped onto the floor, drop by drop, but Sophia did not notice at all.

Only when she saw her grandmother’s urn on the cabinet beside her did she let out a breath of relief.

When the nurse came in, she saw Sophia collapsed on the floor, clutching the urn tightly in her arms.

The nurse frowned and quickly helped her up. “Miss, you’re pregnant. You can’t sit on the cold floor like this.”

Pregnant?

Sophia stared up at the nurse in a daze for a long moment. Then she lowered her head in disbelief and looked at her flat stomach, suddenly finding the whole thing unbearably absurd.

The child she had waited eight years for had come at the worst possible time.

“Miss, a kind passerby brought you to the hospital.”

The nurse studied Sophia’s face and softened her voice. “If it’s inconvenient for you, would you like me to contact your family so someone can pay the medical bill first?”

Family? Medical bill?

Sophia closed her eyes.

Her grandmother was dead. She had no family left in this world.

And Julian had frozen all of her accounts.

She took the bill from the nurse. Her heart hurt so badly she could hardly breathe. After several deep breaths, she barely managed to suppress her emotions and said quietly, “I’ll pay it myself in a while. Also, please help me schedule an abortion as soon as possible.”

The next day, Sophia borrowed money from Ethan, her law school senior in Southport, and paid all of her medical bills and the abortion procedure fee.

When she came off the procedure table, her legs were weak, but she forced herself to book a flight to Southport for three days later.

Only after finishing all of that did she brace herself against the wall and move step by step back toward her hospital room.

Just as she was about to reach the door, someone suddenly called her name from behind. “Sophia!”

Sophia turned around and saw Julian.

He still had the child in one arm and his other arm around Claire. His brows were slightly furrowed as he looked at her. “Why are you in the hospital?”

Sophia opened her mouth, but before she could speak, Julian’s gaze landed on her pants, and his expression changed sharply.

“Sophia, are you sick? Why are you bleeding so much?”

Sophia followed his gaze and looked down. Only then did she see the dark red stain spreading across her pants.

She wanted to speak, but the pain in her lower abdomen made her whole body tremble.

Her lips moved several times, but no sound came out.

Julian had already put the child down and was about to walk toward her.

Before he could, Claire took a sanitary pad out of her purse and walked up to Sophia. “Your period must have started. Go to the restroom and take care of it.”

When Julian heard that, he stopped in his tracks and visibly let out a breath of relief.

He looked at Sophia and was just about to say something when Claire had already returned to his side. She wrapped her arm around his in a possessive gesture, gave Sophia a half-smiling look, and said, “Honey, do you think Ms. Bennett found out our schedule? Maybe she waited here on purpose to put on a pity act and make you feel sorry for her.”

At those words, every trace of concern on Julian’s face vanished.

He gave Sophia a cold, fed-up glance and said only, “Sophia, stop playing games.”

Then he picked the child up again, took Claire by the arm, and turned to leave.

The child lay against his shoulder and looked back curiously. His round eyes happened to meet Sophia’s gaze.

Sophia pressed a hand against her lower abdomen, where she had just had the abortion, and pulled her lips into a mocking smile.

Then she dragged herself into the hospital room with difficulty, placed the urn beside her pillow, and curled up beside it the way she used to curl up beside her grandmother as a child before falling asleep.

When Sophia opened her eyes again, she had been shaken awake violently.

Julian was yanking at her arm roughly, the veins at his temples bulging.

Sophia watched his mouth open and close. It took her a long while before she finally understood his furious question.

“Where did you hide Claire’s and my son? Hand him over right now!”
