The Twin Face That Haunts Me Chapter 08

I stared at her unblinking, desperate to believe this tenderness was real.

She pressed her palm to my forehead, her skin warm, carrying the familiar scent I’d missed for years. “Are you coming down with a cold? You’ve been sneezing nonstop.”

My mind grew fuzzy, and I breathed in her scent greedily. “Mom, I-”

“You can’t get Selly sick right before her engagement party.” Mom’s brows drew tight with anxiety, cutting me off mid-sentence. “If you’ve caught a cold, you should stay somewhere else temporarily, just to be safe.”

I froze solid. The tiny spark of warmth in my chest vanished, doused in ice water.

Mom must’ve seen how pale my face turned, because she rushed to add a hasty, awkward

afterthought. “I’ll pay for your lodging, of course-”

I stood up without a word.

“Flora, that’s not what I meant, don’t get me wrong.” Mom hurried after me, stopping two steps behind my chair. “Just put on a mask, okay? Selly’s always had weak health, and her engagement’s so close, you know how fragile she is…”

“I understand.” I cut her off before she could ramble further, my voice trembling faintly. “I… I’ll

grab a mask right away.”
