The Twin Face That Haunts Me Chapter 06

Thomas never replied to my message. Just as Mom had always said, he paid no mind to anyone except Selena, softening only for her.

At lunchtime, a friend request popped up on my Instagram. The username read Richard Foster.

I tapped into his profile without much thought. His profile picture was loud and garish, neon colors screaming off the screen-like a flamboyant peacock preening for attention. A stark contrast to Thomas’s muted, minimalist aesthetic.

I accepted the request, and messages flooded in immediately.

Richard Foster: [Miss Carter, I’m literally right around your house.]

Richard Foster: [You gotta come save me, I met a monster capable of dominating humanity, it’s

terrifying.]

The messages made zero sense. I’d planned to ignore him, but glanced out the window to see rain pouring down outside.

Five minutes later, I grabbed an umbrella and headed out against my better judgment-he’d kept spamming nonsense nonstop, rambling about the monster attacking him with silly one-liners and snacks until I couldn’t ignore him anymore.

I followed directions on my phone for about a hundred yards before stopping and squinting into the

distance.

The first thing to catch my eye was a tall, broad-shouldered man crouching on the ground in the pouring rain, without an umbrella.

His soaked white dress shirt clung to his frame, outlining sharp shoulder blades and the hollow of his spine, narrow, firm hips. Even crouched on the curb, his tall frame commanded

presence.

A single word crossed my mind unbidden: Hot.

The “hot stranger” was still arguing with his so-called monster. I lowered my gaze and spotted a tiny newborn kitten curled beneath him. I stared blankly.

His expensive custom tailored suit jacket was draped over the kitten’s tiny body to shield it from

the downpour.

“Stupid cat, what are you staring at? Don’t get the wrong idea-I hate fuzzy little creatures like

you.”

“Don’t think I’m rescuing you, I just happened to walk past. I’m not some charity case, I’m actually

terrible.”

The kitten mewled softly, timid and fragile. He cleared his throat awkwardly.

“What’s that noise? I don’t speak feline… Wait, are you thanking me? At least you’ve got some

manners.”

The kitten wobbled unsteadily to its paws, inching forward to rub against his slacks. Richard froze, jerking backward as if electrocuted. His long legs tangled, and he nearly face-planted into a puddle

I watched the absurd scene unfold and burst out laughing without meaning to.

He spun around, his gaze landing on my face. He froze for three full seconds, and the tips of his ears flushed bright pink.
