When Damon saw me frozen in place, his gaze dropped to my hand gripping his.

Without a word, he intertwined our fingers and led me out.

He didn’t even spare the others a glance.

Once we were in the car, he didn’t start the engine. He just sat there.

The air around him felt like a bomb about to go off.

I bit my lip, hesitating for a long moment before finally speaking.

“I didn’t mean to interrupt your dinner. I just walked into the wrong room.”

His expression didn’t soften.

“I didn’t know she was your sister.”

“And I wasn’t trying to show everyone we were together.”

His face somehow got even darker.

“Why weren’t you?”

“Huh?”

He was quiet for a moment. Then he turned to look at me.

His eyes were slightly red.

“Do you like someone else?”

“What? No!”

“Then why are you…”

I pouted. “You yelled at me.”

He froze. The moment he saw the tears welling up, his whole demeanor shifted.

“I’m sorry.” His voice melted. “I didn’t mean to scare you. My fault.”

After another pause, he added quietly, “I’ll make it up to you when we get home, okay?”

I shook my head.

“No. I don’t want that.”

His lips parted as if he wanted to argue. In the end, he said nothing.

He tightened his grip on the steering wheel and reached to start the car.

“Damon.”

His hand stopped. The engine never turned over.

“What did you call me?”

Disbelief filled his eyes.

“Damon.”

He let out a hollow laugh.

“You want to break up with me, don’t you, Nerissa?”

“…”

“You’ve called me ‘Damon’ ten times in the last few days.” His voice dropped.

“You used to call me babe, baby, sweetheart… or Dame.”

Come to think of it, I’d almost never called him by his actual name.

He was older than me. Before I realized I liked him, I’d always called his nickname.

After I fell for him, it became “baby,” “sweetheart,”-every mushy name in the book, whether he seemed to

care or not.

After we started dating, even “hubby” slipped out naturally.

These past few days, though, I’d been sticking to his name-figuring he probably hated all those pet names.

Damon looked at me like I was a total heartbreaker.

“Nerissa.” His voice was rough. “You’re the one who clung to me first.”

“If you try to break up with me, I swear I’ll die.”
