My Brain Fades, His Hate Never Ends Chapter 09

My Brain Fades, His Hate Never Ends Chapter 09

Elias Voss was getting weaker by the day.

The doctors said his organs were failing one by one.

If a matching kidney didn’t turn up in a week, he wouldn’t make it.

No donor kidney matched him anywhere in Havenbrook, not even across the entire national registry.

Hope was fading fast.

Jude Cole watched me sink deeper into gloom and finally spoke up.

“Elara, you’re… hurting, aren’t you?”

I nodded.

“He’s gonna die.”

“I don’t want him to die.”

Jude sighed and pulled me into his arms.

“It’s his fate.”

“We… did all we could.”

I rested against my brother, but one thought burned in my mind.

A kidney.

I had two kidneys.

Could I give him one of mine?

The idea took root like wildfire and wouldn’t let go.

I found Dr. Hale and asked him.

“Can I give Elias one of my kidneys?”

Dr. Hale froze.

“Elara, don’t talk nonsense.”

“Your health is already fragile. You can’t survive major surgery like this.”

“Besides, the odds of a match are next to nothing.”

I refused to back down.

“What if?”

“What if it works?”

Dr Hale stared at my stubborn gaze and shook his head in defeat.

“Fine’

“I’ll run the compatibility test.”

“But I’m warning you now – even if you’re a match, I won’t let you go through with the operation.”

“Your body can’t handle it.”

I nodded.

“I understand.”

The test results came back quickly.

I took the report to Elias.

He was unconscious.

I set the paper on his nightstand and sat beside him, watching him quietly.

His breathing was shallow.

Ite

op at any second.

out my digital voice recorder and spoke softly to him.

Elias, I think I’m starting to like you,”

“I don’t remember what happened between us before.”

“But when I see you hurt, it hurts me too.”

“Everyone says you’re gonna die soon.”

“I don’t want that.”

“So can I give you one of my things?”

“If you take it, you can’t be mean to me anymore.”

“And you can’t make me sad ever again.”

I smiled to myself when I finished.

I sounded like a kid bargaining with an adult.

I had no idea if he’d heard me.

All I knew was that saying it lifted a weight off my chest.

I stood up to leave.

But he caught my hand.

He’d woken up without me noticing, eyes fixed on me.

His gaze blazed bright.

“Elara, did you mean every word you just said?”

I nodded.

He smiled.

Tears spilled down his cheeks.

“Silly girl.”

“I could never take something that’s yours.”

He picked up the test report and glanced at it.

When he saw the line that said 99.9% match, he went completely still.

He stared at me in disbelief, his voice shaking.

“This… this is real?”

I nodded again.

He broke into a violent cough, like he was coughing up his lungs.

I hurried to pat his back.

But he grabbed my hand and held it tight, staring at me fiercely.

“Elara, listen to me.”

“You are not getting this surgery, do you hear me?”

“I’d rather die than let you risk your life.”

“Your life matters more than mine.”

I looked at his panicked face and thought he was kind of cute.

I didn’t say a word. I just smiled at him.

He grew more frantic

What are you smiling at? Are you even listening to me?

Elara Cole, I’m ordering you – drop this idea!”

It was the first time he’d snapped my full name.

But there was no hatred, no coldness like before.

Only overwhelming, overflowing care.

I leaned in and pressed a light kiss to his forehead.

“Ellas”

“You’re so annoying.”

He fraze

He went completely still.

Just then, Dr. Hale burst in, wild with excitement.

“Mr. Voss! We found one!”

“We have a matching kidney donor!”

Elias was still dazed from the kiss

“What?”

“A kidney” Dr. Hale exclaimed

“A brain-dead patien

elty just had family consent for organ donation

match for your

Schedule the surgery right away!”

Relief and joy flooded Elias’s face

He squeezed my hand over and over

“Elara, did you hear that?”

‘I’m not gonna die.”

We… we have a future.”

was happy too.

Truly deeply happy for him

But for some reason.

A tiny empty feeling settled in my chest.

It was like someone had taken away a toy I’d been looking forward to for so long.

The surgery was scheduled for three days later.

Those three days were the happiest Elias had been in a long time.

He could even get out of bed and walk with me in the garden.

He told me stories about us.

About the first time we met.

About our first date.

About our first kiss.

I didn’t understand everything, but I smiled just watching him light up as he spoke,

The night before the surgery.

He called me into his hospital room and pulled a velvet box from under his pillow.

He opened it. Inside was the ring he’d thrown on the floor – the one I’d picked up.

“Elara’

He dropped to one knee, looking up at me with devotion in his eyes.

“I owed you a proposal five years ago.

‘Today, I’m making it right.”

“Will you marry me?”

“Be my only wife, for the rest of my life”
