I took a deep breath.

“You said it yourself last night. Elodie is smart.”

“Having my frumber in your phone is a time bomb. Sooner or later, it’ll go off.”

He nodded.

“Fine.”

“Then when I need you, I’ll just wait outside your office.”

“That’s easier anyway. You can’t ignore my texts if I’m standing there.”

“Are you insane?”

I yanked my hand free.

“When I said we should act like nothing happened, you agreed.”

“Then you turned around and asked Elodie out.”

“What is the point of doing this now?”

“If she finds out, do you think she’ll still want to be with you?”

He paused, then slowly let go.

“Breck is a player. I just don’t want you getting tricked. That’s all.”

“Besides, I promised I’d do one thing for you.”

“I don’t want that one thing to be cleaning up your messy love life.”

I forced myself to calm down and softened my voice.

“My life is not your problem.”

“The best way you can help me is to leave me alone.”

It happened to be Friday afternoon.

I took the rest of the day off. But after the weekend, when I returned to work, the office felt strange.

Everyone wore the same faint look of contempt.

Even Pippa, who usually talked nonstop, sat quietly at her desk with her shoulders tucked in.

Normally, the second I arrived, she would rush over and tell me the latest office gossip.

I rolled my chair closer.

“What’s going on?”

“Did Dana tear into you so badly you’re afraid to talk?”

Pippa looked up, her expression strange.

“Maris, I honestly admire your nerve.”

“You did something that huge in silence, and now you’re still joking?”

I froze and was about to ask what she meant.

Then Elodie walked straight up to me and slapped me across the face.

“I drove you home in the rain. I brought you a gift.”

“And you turned around and seduced my boyfriend. Have you no shame?”

Elodie always looked fragile, but the slap landed hard.

I was stunned for a second.

Then the burning pain across my cheek dragged me back to reality.

“I didn’t.”

“Then what is this? It’s all over the company Slack.”

Her face was dark as she shoved a video in front of me.

It showed the moment Dash had opened the car door and pulled me by the wrist.

The angle was perfectly wrong.

In the footage, it looked like we had kissed.

“That’s taken out of context.’

“Dash and I were only talking.”

Elodie laughed coldly.

“A few days ago, you said you didn’t know Dash. Now you were just talking?”

“Maris, is there a single honest word in your mouth?”

Pippa nodded beside her, looking at me with disappointment.

“We came back together that day.”

“If you were only talking, why did you send me upstairs first?”

“I really didn’t think you were that kind of person.”

I wanted to explain. But the words died in my throat.

I couldn’t exactly say I had dated Dash online for half a year because I had been mistaken for Elodie.

That would only make everything worse.

“You never really know people.”

“Maybe that online boyfriend of hers was married too.”

“Why else would he hide and refuse to meet her for so long?”

“We’re all adults. No one stays purely online for months unless something’s off.”

My face went white.

The scattered whispers around me pressed down until I could barely breathe.

Elodie folded her arms.

“For the sake of being coworkers, I won’t make this harder than it has to be.”

“Resign on your own and leave Dunmere. I’ll pretend this never happened.”
