“Mrs. Parker, Claire committed to the University of Miami. Her acceptance package arrived some

time ago.”

“In fact, she flew to Miami yesterday to check in early.”

“Didn’t she tell you?”

My mother didn’t hear another word Rebecca Collins said.

All she could think about was that I had left home and moved more than fifteen hundred miles

south.

After a long moment, another thought struck her.

As far as she remembered, my grades had always been average. At best, I should have qualified for

Lakeside State University close to home.

How had I been accepted by the University of Miami?

“Ms. Collins, are you sure there hasn’t been a mistake?”

Rebecca was both amused and irritated by the question.

“Mrs. Parker, I’m sorry to say this, but do you truly not know your own daughter’s SAT score?”

“Claire struggled before, but during the second half of the school year, she pushed herself from outside the top one hundred to the top few students in her class.”

“She performed exceptionally well on the SAT and ranked sixth in the entire state.”

“Claire ranked sixth in the state?” all four of them shouted together.

Lily had already been upset that her attempt to sabotage my SAT had failed.

When she learned my total score was a full hundred points above hers, jealousy twisted her face.

“I should’ve put all three tablets in the milk.”

Unlike Lily, my parents felt mostly thrilled.

They had always believed I was dull, average in intelligence, and completely lacking in anything

remarkable.

Lily’s grades were ordinary too, but she was prettier and more socially skilled.

That was why they had favored her for years and ignored me in everything.

Now they were being told that the daughter they had dismissed had earned admission to an

excellent university.

Regret for years of favoritism hit them at once.

Nathan Reed also heard that I had ranked sixth in the state.

I had hidden my dramatic improvement because I wanted to surprise him.

The news left him speechless.

But once the shock passed, Nathan felt more excited than anything else.

When his parents learned that he had scored 1560 on the SAT but planned to give up Harvard for Lily Parker and attend an average local state school, they had exploded.

They enlisted every relative they could find to talk sense into him, and Nathan eventually chose his

future.

Before the college commitment deadline, he changed his decision from Lakeside State University

back to Harvard.

Now he felt relieved that he had done it.

After spending so much time with Lily, he had noticed flaws he had never seen before.

Her jealousy was extreme. Once, he casually mentioned that I had strong logical reasoning skills.

Lily immediately gave him the cold shoulder and threatened to end their friendship.

He had to send flowers for three straight days and write a ten-page apology before she forgave him.

The other thing Nathan hated most was how delicate she acted.

If she stumbled over a pebble, she claimed her ankle had swollen and demanded that he carry her.

Under 104-degree heat, Nathan struggled all the way home with her on his back.

More than his irritation with Lily, he remembered the week I had spent hiking beside him without

complaint.

Nathan realized that if he truly had to choose between Lily and me, he would still choose me.

He had been worried my grades wouldn’t meet Harvard’s admission standards and that we would

be separated

Once he learned my score, every concern disappeared.

He immediately called, eager to tell me that he had chosen Harvard after all.

When he couldn’t reach me, he finally called Mason.

The moment Mason named the university I had chosen, Nathan felt as though the sky had collapsed.
