Lucas had been getting clingier by the day.

I was starting to wonder whether every cold, untouchable guy secretly had a completely different personality in private.

In person, Lucas was ice.

He had just stepped out of the shower.

“Here’s his number. Text him so he knows who to look for.”

I stared at the contact card.

Should I tell Ethan I already had Lucas’s number?

But if my brother ever found out I had been secretly dating someone online, he would lose his mind.

I grabbed my bag and headed out.

I didn’t have classes that day.

A few days earlier, Ethan had invited me to watch Alden’s basketball game, and I had agreed because I had nothing better to do.

When I reached the curb outside my dorm, Lucas was already there.

He had not brought his car.

Instead, a scooter was parked beside him.

He still turned heads, even standing next to that thing.

When he saw me, his expression stayed flat.

“Morning traffic is a nightmare,” he said. “I borrowed this from a friend.”

He glanced at my clothes.

“You okay riding it?”

I looked down at my jeans and nodded.

Thank God I had dressed practically.

Lucas handed me a helmet, then paused.

“Your brother sent you my number. Why didn’t you text me?”

I froze.

My face went pale.

“You mentioned you had a girlfriend,” I said, scrambling for an excuse.

“I figured texting you privately might not be appropriate.”

Lucas actually smiled, as if he approved.

“Good call.”

Then he looked at me, cool and composed.

“And stick with Lucas. Only my girlfriend gets to call me Luke.”

He said it so casually that it almost sounded reasonable.

“I love her,” he added. “If she found out another girl was using her nickname for me, I’d be dead.”

That was when I realized the only reason he had been civil at dinner was because of Ethan.

Alone with me, he looked like he would rather be anywhere else.
