My online boyfriend seemed cold and aloof to everyone else, but behind the screen, he was insatiable.

Once the initial thrill wore off, the drama queen in me started picking fights over nothing.

“Babe, do you know the opposite of ‘together’?”

He replied instantly.

“Of course I do, sweetheart.”

“Good,” I typed back. “Because we’re done.”

From that moment on, my online boyfriend became hopelessly insecure.

Every day, he was either bending over backward to cheer me up or begging me to finally meet him in person.

Then, at my brother’s birthday dinner, I met his aloof roommate.

Something about him felt strangely familiar.

My brother leaned closer and whispered, “Don’t let that pretty face fool you. Once he falls for someone, he falls hard.”

“His online girlfriend threatens to dump him a hundred times a day, and he still keeps crawling back.”

I froze.

Across the table, his roommate pulled out his phone and sent a voice message to his girlfriend.

No one noticed my phone vibrating several times in a row.

I opened it and found several updates from my online boyfriend.

Not daring to play them out loud, I slipped in an earbud and tapped the first voice message.

What I heard made my stomach drop.

“Babe, it’s my buddy’s birthday tonight, so we’re all out for dinner.”

“Don’t worry. There aren’t any other girls here, just Ethan’s sister.”

“I’ll text you as soon as we’re done, okay?”

The words sounded painfully familiar.

In fact, I could have sworn I had heard them barely a minute ago, straight from Lucas’s mouth.

My heart started pounding.

I glanced across the table at Lucas, who was fiddling with his phone and clearly waiting for a reply.

It couldn’t be that much of a coincidence, could it?

To test my theory, I typed back, “What’s your friend’s name?”

His reply came almost immediately.

“Ethan Ellis. I’ll introduce you two someday.”

My heart dropped straight into my stomach.

I was completely screwed.

Even though I didn’t want to believe it, I had to face the truth.

My online boyfriend was Lucas.

He was my brother’s best-looking roommate and the campus heartthrob at Alden University.

According to Ethan, half the women on campus had tried to get his attention.

Tonight was the first time Lucas and I had ever met in person.

I had been so stunned by his model-perfect face that I had stood there staring for several seconds.

Somehow, I had managed to pull myself together and greet him like a normal person.

“Hey, are you okay?” my brother asked, sliding a drink toward me. “You look pale.”

“I’m fine.”

I shook my head and quickly typed back, “Okay. Enjoy your dinner.”

Lucas kept sweet-talking me for another five minutes before finally signing off.
