He Was Never Untouchable, Just Untouched By Me Chapter 05

He Was Never Untouchable, Just Untouched By Me Chapter 05

On the way back to the dorm, I stole one last glance over tny shoulder.

The female lead was Vivian Connelly, the girl who’d beaten me for Homecoming Queen by one vote.

She and Julian were standing face to face, and she was smiling up at him, soft and easy. I was too far away to hear what they were saying.

The next day, I showed up at Pinewood Memorial Hospital first thing.

Julian in a white coat, that sculpted body hidden underneath, was almost cruel to look at.

“Miss Brooks, I had a feeling you’d show up.” His tone was flat, almost clinical.

“It’s crowded out here. Let’s go to my office.”

“Can we keep this quick? Whatever you’ve got planned, save it for later. I’m short on time.”

I blinked. He thought I was here to start up again.

“I’m here to cancel my appointment. I won’t be coming around to bother you anymore.”

Julian went still.

Once it was sorted, I gave him a polite nod. “I’ve got lunch plans. I should head out.”

“Chloe.” My name left his mouth like it cost him something.

“Have you lost interest already?”

It was the first time he’d ever used my name. Before I could answer, the assistant jumped in, practically glowing,

“Obviously, Dr. Sterling. No one’s going to bother you at work again.”

Julian’s gaze slid to the assistant. His face gave away nothing.

The assistant took this as permission to keep going, grinning.

“Don’t worry, Dr. Sterling. I checked. None of Chloe’s relationships have lasted more than two months.”

“The novelty’s probably worn off, or she’s already moved on to someone new. You’ll never have to deal with her again. Isn’t that great?”

Julian’s frown deepened. The temperature in his stare dropped by the second.

Julian rarely let anything show on his face. Right now, he looked absolutely murderous.

The assistant finally picked upon it and let the smile die.

I was giving him exactly what he wanted. So why did he look like I’d just ruined his day?

In the silence, my phone up with a text from Gavin Reynolds.

[Chloe, I’m at the restaurant. Where are you? Want me to come get you?]

[No need. On my way!]

This was my second attempt at taking Gavin out. The first time, Audrey had dragged me away to pick up Julian at the airport before we’d even ordered.

I was an undergrad tagging along on grad-level research, barely keeping my head above water. Gavin, two years ahead of me in the same department, had helped me more than anyone.

But the moment I’d laid eyes on Julian, I’d lost my entire mind, and every scrap of free time had gone into chasing him. The thank-you dinner I owed Gavin had been collecting dust ever since.

Julian’s eyes drifted to my screen, casual enough to pretend it meant nothing.

“Who’s Gavin?”

“An upperclassman in my department.” Then a better idea struck.

“He’s sweet, eager, generous, follows me around like a golden retriever. That’s my type.”

He was everything Julian wasn’t.

If that didn’t convince Julian I was over it, nothing would.

I walked out feeling quietly triumphant. My face might actually survive this story after all. I was too busy celebrating to catch the way Julian’s expression had gone dark.
