Proposed to Him with a Deed but He Already Had a Child Chapter 07

The light in Ethan’s eyes dimmed.

“Nora, don’t say things you don’t mean just because you’re angry.’

I yanked my wrist free.

A dull, tearing ache spread from my wound, but it was nothing compared to the devastation inside me.

Early the next morning, I checked myself out against medical advice and flew straight to Port Haven Regional Medical Center, where my mother had been treated.

The staff in the hospital administration office looked visibly uneasy when they saw me.

“Ms. Blake, your mother’s records have been archived. You’ll need to submit a formal request before we can release anything.”

“Fine. I’ll file whatever paperwork you need.”

I took out my phone and called the state Department of Health’s complaint line in front of them.

“Hello. I want to file a formal complaint against Port Haven Regional Medical Center for unlawfully destroying surveillance footage connected to a patient death and a suspected criminal case. I’m requesting an immediate state investigation.”

The hospital administrator went pale.

“Ms. Blake, please don’t do this. We can talk this through.”

I ended the call and looked at him calmly.

“Then give me the original surveillance backup. Don’t tell me it doesn’t exist.”

His lips trembled.

“Please wait here. I’ll speak with our IT department.”

Half an hour later, I received a surveillance clip labeled [Recovered from Accidental Deletion).

With the evidence in hand, I went straight to the officers who had handled my original report.

After watching the footage, one of them closed the laptop, his expression grave.

“Ms. Blake, this does constitute circumstantial evidence that someone deliberately harassed your mother and drove her to jump. We’re formally opening an investigation.”

I opened Instagram and saw Sabrina’s post about the lavish sip-and-see reception she was planning for her daughter.

A humorless smile crossed my face.

Prison alone would be too easy for her.

I wanted to make sure she could never show her face in Port Haven again.

The reception was being held at the Crestmont Hotel, the most luxurious hotel in the city.

Megan sent me the invitation with a message.

Megan: [Sabrina asked me to pass this along. She hopes you’ll come.]

Of course Sabrina wanted me there.

She wanted to parade her victory in front of everyone.

What she did not know was that I had been waiting an entire month for an opportunity like this.

After I repeatedly pressed the hospital administrator for answers, he finally admitted that Sabrina’s assistant had requested the original surveillance footage on the day my mother died while claiming to represent the family.

The police investigation was moving slowly because the Caldwell family’s influence ran deep in Port Haven, and the investigators were under considerable pressure.

But my complaint to the state Department of Health had worked. State regulators had opened a formal

review.

Everything was unfolding the way I had planned.

All I needed was the right moment.

Sabrina’s reception was that moment.

The event began at seven that evening,

I did not wear a gown. I arrived in a simple black pantsuit.

By the time I reached the hotel, the ballroom was already filled with elegantly dressed guests, and nearly

every prominent name in Port Haven was there.

The Caldwell family had built its fortune in construction materials before expanding into real estate. Their connections ran deep, and even local business leaders and politicians went out of their way to stay in the family’s good graces.

Sabrina moved through the crowd in a custom champagne-colored gown, smiling as she charmed one guest

after another.

No one would have guessed that only a month earlier, she had been screaming at Ethan in a hospital ballway.

Ethan stood beside her in a tailored suit, his expression distant.

The moment he saw me walk in, his face changed.

He crossed the ballroom almost immediately and lowered his voice.

“What are you doing here?”

Sabrina brushed him aside with a smile.

“Ethan, don’t be so tense. I invited Nora.”

“Nora, I’m so glad you came. That means you’ve forgiven me, right??”

I smiled faintly.

“Of course. If you can sit through this video, I’ll forgive you.”

A second later, the massive screen behind me came to life.
