Changing My Flight, I Canceled the Toxic Family Forever Chapter 06

“Mrs. Brooks, Emma applied to Charleston University in the South. Her acceptance letter has already arrived. Oh, and she left yesterday for early orientation. Didn’t she tell you?”

Sarah didn’t hear anything Ms. Reynolds said after that.

Her mind was filled with one thought: I had gone out of state, hundreds of miles away in the South.

After a long moment, she suddenly snapped back to herself.

No.

That didn’t make sense.

My grades had always been average.

The best school within reach should have been Brookhaven State, right here at home.

How had Emma gotten into Charleston University?

“Ms. Reynolds, are you sure you didn’t make a mistake?”

Ms. Reynolds sounded both amused and angry. “Sarah, I don’t mean to be rude, but how do you not know your own daughter’s score?”

“Emma’s grades used to be a little weak. But in the second half of senior year, she suddenly took off. She went from outside the top hundred to one of the top students in her class.”

“And on her standardized exams, she outperformed every expectation and ranked sixth statewide.”

“What? She ranked sixth statewide?”

Everyone shouted at once.

Chloe was especially stunned.

A moment ago, she had still been feeling guilty for almost ruining my exam.

When she heard my score was over a hundred points higher than hers, jealousy twisted her face.

“I should’ve dumped all three pills into that milk.”

Unlike Chloe’s jealousy, my parents felt more surprise than anything else.

In their minds, I had always been dull and average, with nothing about me that stood out.

Chloe’s grades were average too, but she was prettier than me and knew how to charm people.

That was why they had always favored her.

That was why they had ignored me again and again.

But now someone had told them the daughter they looked down on had gotten into an elite university.

Regret hit them all at once.

On the other side, Noah heard about my statewide ranking too.

Back then, I had wanted to surprise him.

So I had kept my huge improvement a secret.

When he heard the news, he was so shocked he couldn’t speak.

But after the shock faded, joy took over.

His parents had found out he wanted to give up Harvard or MIT for Chloe.

They were furious.

They refused to let him throw away a near-perfect SAT score.

They called every relative they could to talk sense into him.

In the end, Noah chose his future.

Before the college application deadline, he changed his first-choice school back to Harvard.

At the same time, he felt relieved.

Thank God he had changed it back.

After spending more time with Chloe, Noah had discovered flaws he had never noticed before.

For one thing, she was insanely jealous.

Once, he casually mentioned that I was good at logical thinking.

Chloe immediately gave him the cold shoulder.

Then she threatened to cut him off completely.

In the end, Noah had to send her flowers for three days straight.

He also wrote a five-thousand-word apology letter.

Only then did Chloe agree to make up with him.

There was something else Noah hated even more: Chloe was spoiled.

Once, she tripped over a tiny pebble on the sidewalk.

She claimed her foot was swollen.

Then she insisted that Noah carry her home.

In the heat of more than 100 degrees, Noah struggled all the way home with Chloe on his back.

The whole way home, he couldn’t stop feeling annoyed with her.

More than that, he thought of me.

He remembered how I had once hiked with him for an entire week without complaining.

Noah thought that if he had to choose between Chloe and me, he still wanted to choose me.

At first, he had worried my score wouldn’t be strong enough for Harvard.

He had thought we might end up in different places.

Now that he knew my score, all his worries vanished.

Excited, he called me right away to tell me the good news: he had changed his first-choice school back to Harvard.

But no matter how many times he called, the call wouldn’t go through.

In the end, he had no choice but to call Ethan.

When he heard the name of the school I had chosen, Noah felt as if the ground had dropped out from under him.
