The Brother I Could Never Call Again Chapter 06

The Brother I Could Never Call Again Chapter 06

In my previous life, Grant had treasured me more than anyone.

My marriage had been delayed again and again.

Every time my parents settled on a suitable match, Grant secretly investigated the man.

Without exception, he always uncovered something.

One looked like the perfect gentleman. In reality, he already had several illegitimate children.

Another seemed loyal and dependable. But he’d dumped the girlfriend he’d dated for years just to come on a blind date with me.

Grant beat him so badly that the man couldn’t stand.

One of them shouted through swollen lips,

“Grant Whitfield! You think your adopted sister is some priceless treasure? She’s just an orphan! She only became a Whitfield because you adopted her! I’m more than good enough for her!”

The next second, another scream echoed through the alley.

Grant swung the metal pipe again. His eyes were terrifying.

“My sister could stay single for the rest of her life. And she’d still never marry someone like you!”

In the end, I really did remain unmarried past thirty.

My life was peaceful and comfortable.

Every spring, Grant took me to see cherry blossoms.

Every summer, he took me to the South of France for vacation.

Every autumn, we traveled through Northern Italy.

Every winter, we skied together in Switzerland.

Those memories still felt close enough to touch.

Then everything changed.

The people searching for Nora finally found a clue.

They learned that she had been at the orphanage all along.

The way Mr. and Mrs. Whitfield looked at me changed overnight. Their eyes filled with resentment.

After loving me for so many years, they couldn’t simply throw me away.

Yet neither could they forgive themselves.

Mr. Whitfield turned his face aside.

“From now on, don’t call us Mom and Dad anymore.”

Panicked, I reached for Mrs. Whitfield’s hand.

She stepped away.

“The Whitfields already gave you more than enough. But if I let you keep calling me ‘Mom’, how could I ever face Nora after I die?”

After that, Mrs. Whitfield fell seriously ill. Mr. Whitfield took her overseas to recover.

Grant grabbed me by the throat.

He demanded to know whether I’d known all along that Nora had been in the orphanage. Whether I’d deliberately taken her place. Whether I’d stolen his real sister from him.

One “brother,” and he’d lost everything.

He squeezed so hard I couldn’t speak for weeks.

Overnight, I went from the Whitfields’ beloved daughter to someone with nowhere to belong.

Late at night, I often thought if Grant had never chosen me back then, maybe everything would’ve been different.

Downstairs, Grant’s birthday party raged.

But this time, I no longer had the right to attend.

Half asleep, I heard the bedroom door crash open.

Grant stumbled inside.

His face was flushed. His eyes unfocused. He pulled me into his arms.

It took me several seconds to understand what was happening.

I struggled desperately.

He’d been drugged. He wasn’t conscious.

I wanted to tell him that I was his sister.

But no sound came from my throat.

Before I passed out, I thought I heard him whisper my name—Sabrina.

After that reckless night, Grant cursed me for being shameless.

“You couldn’t bear to lose your life of luxury? You couldn’t stay the Whitfields’ daughter, so you decided to use me to become Mrs. Whitfield instead?”

He was rough. Cruel. Again and again, he forced himself on me.

I nearly lost half my life.

“Fine. If this is what you wanted, I’ll marry you!”

But not long after our wedding, Grant left to continue searching for Nora.

He stayed away for months. He even missed the wedding date we’d originally set.

The ceremony was postponed over and over.

Until one day, he returned with a girl who looked like Nora as a child.

The wedding was held in a hurry.

Mr. and Mrs. Whitfield never attended. Neither did any guests.

After we married, Grant treated me colder than a stranger.

Once upon a time, I used to hide in his arms and call him “brother.”

He had treasured me like the most precious thing in the world.

If I caught a cold, he stayed by my bedside all night.

If I told him I missed him, he’d fly home overnight on his private jet.

It was all gone.

So when my life slipped away, I didn’t panic.

I felt relief.

If I met Nora on the other side, I’d tell her one thing:

Her parents had never stopped looking for her.

“Why are you afraid of me?”

Grant’s voice pulled me out of my memories.

I quickly steadied myself and took another step back, keeping a careful distance between us.

Lowering my head, I answered politely,

“You misunderstood, Young Master. You’ve always treated Mrs. Colleen and me very well.”

Every word Grant wanted to say died in his throat.

He stood with the sunlight behind him. His long, dark eyes were impossible to read.

After what felt like forever, he silently turned around and walked away.

Only then did I finally relax.

The incident at the birthday party became nothing more than a brief interruption.

Life continued.

I buried myself in studying.

I dreamed about getting into college, leaving the Whitfield family behind, starting a brand-new life.

Maybe…

That would be my real rebirth.
