The day I was attacked by a vampire, my best friend Vera insisted I put my fated mate to the test.

“Just say you lost your memory,” she said with an easy smile. “We’ll see what Damian ends up choosing.”

I didn’t think too much about it.

In the werewolf world, a fated mate is supposed to be the most loyal thing there is. But I was wrong.

When I came to, the air smelled like disinfectant, blood… and something familiar that made my wolf stir with joy.

Damian was here.

I forced down the urge to throw myself into his arms and looked up at him, pretending to be confused.

“Who are you?”

He went still.

Then, Vera looped her arm through his. Her voice was light, sweet.

“Dummy, he’s my mate. You don’t remember?”

Damian nodded. He avoided my eyes.

“Yeah. I’m Vera’s mate.”

I went still. I couldn’t believe it.

Vera—my best friend of ten years. We met before I even knew I was a werewolf.

Back then, I was just a normal girl in a small human town.

Vera got lost, so I walked her back toward the forest. That was the day I met Damian, the alpha’s son.

The moment he saw me, he fell in love.

Later, I found out I was a hybrid—half werewolf, my father a rogue. The lowest of the low.

But it never changed how Damian loved me.

One was my best friend of ten years. The other was my fated mate. I couldn’t bring myself to believe any of it.

Was this some kind of April Fools’ joke?

Before I could react, Vera rose on her toes and brushed a light kiss against the corner of Damian’s lips.

“Damian, I told you Raven would bless us.”

“You were just overthinking it. You shouldn’t have kept it from her.”

She turned to me, smiling like everything was perfect.

“Raven, you’ll bless us, right?”

The sharp scent of disinfectant made my stomach churn.

But what really made me sick… was watching that.

This wasn’t a joke. This was real.

I couldn’t stop myself. I looked at Damian.

He tilted his head slightly and avoided my gaze. His lashes fluttered as if he was trying to hide the truth I desperately wanted to see.

Just last night, those same amber eyes had been fixed on me under the moonlight. Like I was the only thing in his world.

“Raven, tomorrow I’ll announce to the pack that you’re my mate.”

“Even if my father objects, you will still be my only mate. My future Luna.”

My wolf howled in pain. My voice came out barely above a whisper.

“When… did you two get together?”

Vera smiled sweetly. She opened her mouth, about to answer.

“I want to hear it from your mate,” I cut in, my voice quiet but sharp.

I stared at Damian, my heart tearing itself apart.

He really thought I’d lost my memory.

He didn’t even hesitate. “In January.”

I looked at him, disappointment flooding in as our mate bond began to crack.

Back in January, his father Alpha Lester threatened to strip him of his inheritance. He wanted him to reject me.

They all wanted the future Luna to come from an alpha or beta family.

And me?

My father was a criminal. He killed my mother and was exiled from the pack. No one knows where he is now.

I had no family. No backing.

That night, I didn’t sleep a wink.

I was the one who suggested breaking our fated mate bond. I wished him happiness.

Damian stood outside my cabin all night in the rain.

His fur was soaked through as he stayed in his wolf form, silent at my door.

When I opened the door, he shifted back to his human form.

He pulled me into his arms, shaking all over.

“Raven, I don’t care about being alpha. I just want you. We won’t break our bond. Promise me we won’t, okay?”

I reached up to touch his face. I couldn’t tell if the wetness was tears or rain.

So it was all a lie.
