The Heiress’s Reckoning: Canceling the $500M Trust Chapter 06

The Heiress’s Reckoning: Canceling the $500M Trust Chapter 06: The Frozen Funding

“Get the Lead Investor out here right now,” Marcus yelled.

He slapped his palm flat against the white marble reception desk.

Elena, the head receptionist for Zenith Holdings, didn’t even blink. “The managing director does not take unannounced meetings.”

“I don’t want a director! I want the backer!” Marcus pointed a finger directly at her face. “Someone froze my operational accounts. My vendor checks are bouncing across the city.”

“Sir, you need to step back.”

“I am the CEO of a seventy-million-dollar tech firm,” Marcus snarled. “I don’t need an appointment. Call him.”

I stood in the second-floor conference room, watching through the floor-to-ceiling one-way mirror. The soundproof glass blocked the physical noise, but the intercom system piped his furious voice directly into my space.

“He spent the entire night in a holding cell,” Julian murmured. He stood next to the audio console, adjusting a dial.

“He looks exactly like a man who just realized he isn’t invincible,” I said.

Marcus’s designer suit was completely ruined. Deep wrinkles creased the jacket. His silk tie hung loose around his neck. Dark circles bruised the skin under his eyes.

“I built my company from nothing!” Marcus shouted at the lobby staff. “I am a self-made man! You do not treat me like a beggar!”

My chest tightened. A sharp, involuntary squeeze gripped my heart.

Not out of pity. Out of pure, sickening realization.

He truly believed his own lies. He used to stand in our tiny kitchen, looking down at me while I patched Leo’s jeans. He swore his success came entirely from his relentless hard work. He claimed his genius alone secured the funding.

Now, I was pulling the rug out. His fake pride was crumbling like wet paper.

I clenched my jaw tight. The sour taste of wasted years flooded my mouth. Ten years of budgeting groceries while he played pretend. I swallowed it down hard.

“Show him the paperwork,” I ordered into the microphone.

Down in the lobby, Elena touched her earpiece. She reached under the marble counter and pulled out a thick, bound document. She slid it across the smooth stone.

“What is this?” Marcus demanded.

“A formal notification of funding withdrawal,” Elena stated.

Marcus let out a harsh, mocking laugh. “Withdrawal? We have an ironclad contract for the remaining fifty million. You can’t just pull it.”

“The trust holds a morality and fiduciary clause,” Elena replied smoothly. “We can, and we did.”

“On what grounds?”

“Gross financial misconduct.”

Marcus grabbed the edge of the desk. “Misconduct? I run a perfectly clean ledger! My CFO audits the books every quarter!”

“You utilized corporate investment funds for personal luxury expenses,” Elena corrected.

“Those were marketing expenditures!”

“The trust flagged seventy-three unauthorized transactions linked to a Ms. Chloe Davis,” Elena said, her voice projecting clearly over the speakers.

Marcus froze. His loud aggression stalled completely.

“That is a mistake,” he stammered.

“A diamond tennis bracelet is not a marketing expense,” Elena read from a printed list. “Neither is a private jet charter to Aspen, or a fifty-thousand-dollar watch.”

“I am the CEO!” Marcus roared. “I authorize the spending to entertain clients!”

“You bought the watch for yourself, Mr. Vance,” Elena countered. “We have the receipt from the jeweler.”

“You have no right to track my movements!”

“The investor owns the capital,” Elena said. “You breached the terms of the agreement.”

“You are killing my company!”

“You killed it yourself, sir.”

“I’ll sue this entire firm!” Marcus threatened. He pointed wildly at the ceiling, completely unaware I was standing right above him. “I’ll drag your mysterious investor into open court!”

“As of eight o’clock this morning, your remaining fifty million dollars has been permanently revoked,” Elena continued, ignoring his outburst. “Your equity is now property of the Wentworth Consortium.”

Marcus stumbled backward.

His heel caught the heavy base of a brass stanchion. The velvet rope snapped taut. The metal pole tipped over and crashed onto the tile floor.

A deafening ring echoed through the lobby.

He didn’t even look down. The color drained rapidly from his face. His skin turned a sickly, pale gray.

“Call the investor,” Marcus pleaded. His voice cracked down the middle.

The arrogance vanished. Raw, unmasked desperation replaced it entirely.

“The decision is final,” Elena said.

“Tell him I’ll pay it back,” Marcus begged, stepping forward again. “I’ll restructure the board. I’ll fire the CFO. Just give me the operating capital for this month.”

“Security will escort you out now, sir.”

Two large guards in black suits stepped out from the elevator bank. They moved directly toward Marcus.

“No. No, wait.” Marcus dug his hands into his coat pockets. “I just need to make a call. I can fix this.”

“He has no one left to call,” I told Julian.

“He will try to call his fiancée,” Julian replied. “He thinks she has her father’s hedge fund money.”

Marcus yanked his smartphone free. His hands shook violently. He fumbled with the screen, trying to punch in his passcode.

A loud chime echoed through the lobby.

A new message notification popped up.

Marcus stared at the bright screen. His fingers went entirely slack.

The expensive smartphone slipped from his grip. It plummeted toward the floor and shattered against the hard tile.

The screen stayed lit. The glass spider-webbed across the display, but the image remained perfectly visible.

“Zoom in on that,” I instructed.

Julian tapped his tablet. The overhead security camera focused entirely on the broken device. The feed popped up on my conference room monitor in high definition.

It was a text message from Chloe.

She didn’t write a single word of explanation. She didn’t offer any comfort.

She just sent a single photo.
