My Mafia Husband Faked Amnesia For Three Years, Now He Regrets It Chapter 03

In the private dining room of Oheka Castle, candlelight fell across the long table.

Aldo Conte, the family’s don, sat at the head. Flanking him were the family consigliere and two of his most trusted Capos.

On paper, they were businessmen dealing with construction, logistics, nightclubs.

But everyone in New York’s underworld knew Aldo controlled multiple shipping lines out of South Brooklyn. And Matteo, after his initiation at twenty-one, had taken over the Red Hook docks and the family’s security detail.

He was a made man. The next don.

Which was exactly why his year-long “illness” had thrown the entire family into chaos.

I sat at the table, my steak poked full of holes by my fork. I hadn’t taken a single bite.

Clara cut the meat into small pieces and fed them to Matteo one by one.

He ate quietly, without resistance.

Aldo and Giulia exchanged a glance.

Giulia asked carefully, “Matteo, do you remember who we are?”

Matteo didn’t answer.

Clara wiped the sauce from the corner of his mouth.

“Do you remember Alessia?” Giulia pressed.

I looked down, picking idly at the food on my plate.

Same answer either way.

Giulia sighed, then frowned at Clara.

“Don’t feed him so much. Matteo’s been full after half a steak since he was a kid. Keep going and you’ll upset his stomach.”

Clara’s fork froze mid-air. Tears welled up fast.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t take good care of him.”

Aldo’s eyes were cold on her.

“Three years ago, I had you sent to London and warned you to stay away from my son. You were just an intern nurse at a rehab center. How dare you come back to New York?”

“Matteo’s wife will only be Alessia.”

Matteo suddenly snatched the fork from Clara and shoved a piece of meat into his mouth, trembling.

“Dad… Mom… I like this.”

Giulia’s eyes went red instantly.

It had been three years since he’d called them that.

Clara whipped out her certificate, then pulled a crayon drawing from her bag.

“I know you don’t like me. But when I heard Matteo was sick, I still went and learned trauma care. I just want to help him.”

The drawing showed four people holding hands.

“Dad” and “Mom” were written next to a man and a woman.

Beside a girl in a white dress, her name was scrawled “Clara”.

Giulia clutched the paper, tears falling.

Aldo took off his glasses and rubbed his brow in silence.

Clara’s eyes flickered with triumph. She laced her fingers through Matteo’s.

“I’m not asking for a title. Even if I can never be Mrs. Conte, I’ll take care of him for the rest of my life.”

Aldo had always been decisive and ruthless, but now, seeing his son’s reaction, he hesitated.

“No need.” I set down my fork. “I’m leaving.”

Everyone at the table turned to me.

Giulia started, panicked. “Alessia, this family will only ever recognize you.”

I gave a calm smile.

“I’ve already told my family I’m coming back to Europe to take over. My flight’s tomorrow night.”

Matteo’s hand froze on the steak knife. The vacant, practiced expression on his face cracked for the first time.

Aldo was silent for a long moment. The consigliere slowly set down his glass, his expression growing heavy, uneasy.

After dinner, Giulia pulled me into the adjoining sitting room.

The door clicked shut and she grabbed my hands tight.

“Alessia, you can’t just hand your place over to a fraud. The one who pulled Matteo out of that lake was you.”

I lowered my gaze.

True or not, it didn’t matter anymore.

In order to drive me away, Matteo faked his medical records and lied to his parents and the whole family.

Even if he knew the truth, we couldn’t go back.

Giulia’s eyes were red.

“After that accident at twenty-six, Matteo really did lose some memories. Clara was just a nurse at the rehab center back then. While we were taking care of you, she told him she was the one who pulled him out of the water.”

“We sent her away after that. Thought once you two got married, he’d recover with time.”

“Then on his thirtieth birthday, he came down with traumatic amnesia. He didn’t even recognize us anymore.”

By the time she finished, her voice was shaking.

I squeezed her hands.

“Don’t worry.”

“Once I’m gone, Matteo will get better fast.”

Giulia stared at me, stunned.

I didn’t explain.

Because I’d already seen the truth with my own eyes.
