He Used AI to Text Me, While Chatting with Her All Night. Ok, I Canceled the Wedding Chapter 04

Five years together. Even calling it off deserved a face-to-face goodbye.

But I woke to an empty bed. Elias was gone.

A rare message waited:

Celeste wants to see the new Slisha Springs Resort. Hanging out with her this afternoon. Back later.

I stared. Replied:

I said it was important.

Instant response:

Don’t be like that.

The AI. Again.

I didn’t reply. Got up. Packed.

Five years, and my life fit in one suitcase.

Afternoon faded to evening. No Elias.

Around eight, I saw Celeste’s post.

A photo of the resort at night, lights strung like stars. Her peace-signing into the camera.

Caption: So much fun with Elias!

A comment: Heard that place is pricey.

Her reply: Happiness > money. Elias is paying 😉

I understood.

Elias had told her I wanted to talk.

So she’d pulled him away, assuming I’d nag about wedding logistics again.

Since planning began, she’d done this.

Food tasting? Stomachache.

Invitations? Broken laptop.

Venue tour? Power outage. Scared alone.

Bit by bit, Elias stopped accompanying me.

This time, I truly had news.

The wedding was off.

The next day, no Elias.

I texted: Coming back today?

Reply: Mm.

Need to tell you something important.

Reply: Got it.

If you don’t come back, there will be consequences.

Reply: Don’t be like that.

Three replies. All AI.

Midnight passed. No message.

Right now, I should’ve been at the vanity, stylist working on my hair.

Wedding cars idling below. Laughter in the hallway.

Instead, silence. One suitcase by the door.

My phone lit up. Elias:

I’ll be at the venue tomorrow morning.

No time then—jogging with Celeste. Keep it simple. Be on time.

Jogging with her. On our wedding morning.

Classic Elias.

I didn’t reply.

Opened his contact. Blocked. Deleted.

Grabbed my suitcase. Cab to the airport.

Five days ago, I’d booked a flight out of Seattle.

In those five days, if Elias had chosen me once…

But he never did.

In five years, he never had.

The plane landed in Portland. I slept like the dead.

Back in Seattle, Elias and Celeste arrived at the hotel before ten.

No floral arch. No welcome sign. No banner with our names.

Elias frowned, flagged a staffer.

“Wedding today? Groom’s party.”

The staffer checked her tablet, confused. Shook her head.

“No wedding scheduled.”

Then she snapped her fingers.

“Oh. There was one. Canceled five days ago.”
