He Left Me in the Rain with No Memory And Now I’m Someone Else’s Wife Chapter 02

I stopped and turned to look at her.

Vanessa crossed her arms and ordered me,

“You’re going to the Ashfords’ tomorrow to break off the engagement.”

“Gideon is completely done with you. He doesn’t want you anymore!”

Gideon finally deigned to look me in the face.

“Ella, I used to think you and Vanessa just had a rocky sisterly relationship. A few little squabbles. I never thought you’d be so low. Splashing hot water, playing dirty tricks. A disgusting person like you doesn’t deserve to be my fiancée.”

I blinked in confusion.

Even though I could barely remember anything anymore, when I heard those words,

my heart ached so inexplicably, and tears just started pouring down my face.

I think, before I lost my memory, I must have really loved Gideon.

But now I could barely recall anything about him.

All that came back to me was the coldness of his back.

I haphazardly wiped my tears dry and nodded.

“Okay. I understand.”

I turned and jotted it down in my little notebook. 3. Break up with Gideon Ashford tomorrow.

Closing the diary, I was about to ask the driver to take me to the nearest bus stop when

my mother’s voice cut me off.

“Stop right there! Vanessa is going shopping this afternoon. If you want to go out, find your own way.”

“In this scorching heat, if you take the car, what is Vanessa supposed to use?”

I actually wanted to argue back.

I wanted to ask my mother why she was so awful to her own biological daughter.

But when I turned around, I saw them all standing there, all cozy and happy together.

Vanessa nestled between my parents, and Gideon stood right there beside them, like one big happy family.

The words died in my throat.

Silently, I pulled out my parasol from my bag and stepped into the blazing sun.

Behind me, I could still vaguely hear my mother muttering,

“Consider it a lesson for her.”

And Gideon’s low voice,

“Serves her right.”

There was no public transport in the villa district. The nearest bus stop was a half-hour walk.

Even with the parasol, the heat rose up from the ground, scorching my feet. By the time I reached the stop, my clothes were glued to my back with sweat, my head was spinning, and I could barely stand from the heat.

After an hour of sardine-packed bus ride, I didn’t even stop to catch my breath before changing into my uniform and shaking drinks behind the counter.

It was hot, it was summer break, and the place was packed.

I was run off my feet, my hands going numb from making so many drinks.

I finally caught a break around three or four in the afternoon when the crowd thinned out.

My stomach was gnawing with hunger, so I was about to huddle in a corner and scarf down some bread.

Then Vanessa’s voice suddenly rang out from above me.

She was waving a black credit card, her smile blinding.

“Sis, how can you slack off when you’re working?”

“Give me five hundred cups of bubble tea! The most complicated kind!”

A kind coworker spoke up for me. “Ma’am, she hasn’t even eaten yet. You can order at the counter, and we’ll have another server take care of you.”

Vanessa whipped her head around and glared at the coworker.

“Mind your own business! I want HER to make them!”

“If she doesn’t finish, I’ll file a complaint against this whole shop and get your boss to dock all your pay!”

I didn’t want to drag my coworkers into it.

So I put down the bread I hadn’t even taken a bite of and stood back up, my vision going black.

Five hundred cups. Even if I worked until midnight, I couldn’t finish.

I looked up and saw Gideon standing right behind Vanessa.

Hands in his pockets, his face an ice-cold mask as he watched Vanessa deliberately torment me.

With no other choice, I turned to him for help.

“Gideon, could you please talk to Vanessa for me? These five hundred cups…”

But before I could even finish my sentence,

Gideon cut me off.

“Ella, drop the martyr act. The Crofts aren’t short on your little summer job money. You insist on coming out here in this heat to suffer, just to play the victim. So you can whine later that Vanessa bullied you.”

“What’s wrong? Can’t keep up the act?”

I didn’t understand where Gideon got such ideas.

I was working this job just to scrape together a few thousand bucks for tuition.

I was about to explain.

But Vanessa impatiently pushed me. “Are you going to make them or not?”

“Believe me, I’ll call and complain right now!”

So I gritted my teeth and worked from three in the afternoon straight to nine at night.

I didn’t even have two sips of water. My stomach was cramping so badly it felt like it was being twisted inside out.

A coworker tried to secretly help me make a few cups, but Vanessa barked at her,

“If anyone helps her, I’ll complain about you too!”

So I worked my ass off from three in the afternoon to nine at night.

Not a drop of water passed my lips.

Gideon watched my ghostly pale face, his eyes full of contempt.

He thought I was acting again.

As he had his assistant take away those five hundred cups, he didn’t forget to mock me.

“Ella, I really underestimated you.”

“Not only are you good at playing dumb, you’re quite the actress too. Throwing your life away just to make me feel sorry for you.”

I was too exhausted to speak and couldn’t be bothered with him.

At 10:30 that night, I dragged my aching legs onto the last bus.

My stomach had long gone past hunger, and everything was going black before my eyes.

Luckily, because of Vanessa’s five-hundred-cup order, the manager gave me an extra fifty bucks as a bonus.

Nice.

That would be enough for a week’s worth of meals in the college cafeteria.

The moment I stepped through the front door, before I could even change my shoes,

Smack!

A slap landed hard across my face, knocking me straight to the ground.
