He Was Ready To Die Until I Told Him I Was Pregnant Chapter 06

[Eleanor is calling again…]

The comments were fed up.

[She doesn’t care about him AT ALL. She never has. He’s just a resource to her!]

[Every single time she needs something, she comes running to him. The second it’s handled, she drops him

like he’s nothing.]

[It’s so gross… And the worst part is he still holds on to those childhood memories. He can’t bring himself to

say no to her.]

[And every single time, he’s the one left hurting.]

The comments faded. I looked at Arthur.

Just as I expected, he was already wavering.

“…”

“Arthur.” I kept my voice soft, pulling him back.

He looked up.

“She’s finally here, and I haven’t even held her yet… I’m too wiped out to get up. Can you bring her to me?”

Something clicked. He set the phone aside and moved to the bassinet.

One look at the tiny thing lying inside, and he froze all over again.

All those months of waiting, and here she was.

I had to call his name three more times before he snapped out of it. He lifted her out of the bassinet like she

was made of glass and set her down beside me.

He couldn’t take his eyes off her.

“She’s so cute.”

I nodded, running my fingers over her cheek, then curling my hand around her tiny fist. I whispered to her.

“Hey, baby girl… Mommy’s got you.”

“I won’t let anything bad happen to you. Ever.”

Something shifted behind Arthur’s eyes.

He looked at our daughter, and I watched the decision settle over him.

Eleanor was still talking on the other end of the line.

“Arthur? Are you even listening to me?”

“This is serious, Arthur. If you don’t help, Julian’s company is done!”

“I don’t know what’s going to happen to me…”

“Are you really just going to abandon me?!”

Her voice cracked further with every word, dissolving into sobs.

Before, this would have broken him. Her tears had always been his soft spot.

But not this time.

“I’m sorry, Eleanor.”

“I can’t help you with this.”

He hung up without waiting for a response, set the phone down, and turned back to our daughter.

The comment section breathed a collective sigh of relief.

[FINALLY. He actually said no for once.]

[She’s been holding those childhood favors over his head like he owes her his whole life. And what did she actually do? She shared her lunch with him a few times at school when he had nothing to eat. That’s it.]

[He’s spent tens of millions on her over the years. That debt’s been paid a hundred times over.]

[He’s SO in love with this baby. Maybe now Eleanor won’t be able to manipulate him anymore… right?)

They weren’t wrong.

Once I brought the baby home, Arthur was a lost cause.

We’d hired a night nurse weeks ago, but Arthur barely let her touch the baby.

He’d watch the nurse do something once, then insist on doing it himself from then on.

Diaper changes, feedings, rocking her to sleep-all Arthur.

If he could have held her every second of the day, he would have.

The man was completely wrapped around her finger.

As the weeks passed and the baby grew used to his scent, it became mutual.

At night, she’d fuss and cry if anyone else tried to hold her. She only wanted him.

The second Arthur took her back, she’d go quiet, just like that.

When Arthur figured that out, he lit up like a Christmas tree

He smiled more every day Real smiles.

Eleanor didn’t give up. She showed up a few more times over the following weeks.

Every visit followed the same script: old memories, then tears. Julian had been in a terrible mood ever since

the company started going under. They fought constantly.

The weight of it all was suffocating her, she said.

She’d been the center of his world for years. No matter how much had changed, hearing her fall apart still

got under his skin.
