He Dropped Me at the Service Station to Take Her Home Chapter 07

I left so abruptly that no one had time to track me down.

Midway through summer break, Izzy called my cell phone using Dean Whitmore’s office landline.

“Ellie, I finally reached you. Where did you go? Mom and I’ve been searching everywhere for you

I cut her sentence off short.

“What do you want?”

Izzy hesitated, her voice small and hurt.

“Ellie, we’re biological sisters, family. Can’t we sit down and talk everything through?”

“Come back home, let’s sort this out together-”

I stood on the fire escape balcony of my Northvale apartment, staring up at the moon, my tone flat

and emotionless.

“I’m never coming back.’

Silence stretched across the line, then soft sniffling noises started up.

“Ellie, are you still angry? I never meant to hurt you, Mom and Cas didn’t mean any harm either-”

“Isolde.”

It was the first time I’d spoken to her with sharp, mocking bite in my voice.

“Save the fake remorse. Don’t get everything handed to you and still act like you’re the victim. I’ve spent a whole month learning sharp comebacks, do you want to hear them?”

Her crying cut off instantly.

I let out a cold laugh.

“Isolde. Mom’s all yours now, Cas is all yours too. Aren’t you happy about that? Why are you

upset?”

A few seconds of dead silence passed, then Mom’s shrill screaming voice blared through the

receiver.

“Elowen, are you insane? What cruel garbage did you just say to Izzy?”

I stared blankly down at the street far below my balcony, already bored of listening to her rant.

Mom’s voice was furious and shrill, the exact tone I’d grown up hearing every single day.

“Izzy’s stayed up night after night worrying about you, calling every person she knows to hunt you down. How can you be so cold? She split everything she had with you when you were kids.”

I let out a sharp, bitter laugh.

“Shared what? Name one single thing she ever gave up for me.”

Mom sputtered for a second, then raised her voice even louder.

“She’s chronically unwell! You’re her little sister, looking out for her is the least you could do!”

“You think running away makes you tough? Fine! Don’t you ever set foot back in this house again, do you hear me?”

I replied steadily, without a single waver.

“Alright. I won’t.”

I blocked Dean’s phone number right after hanging up.

He sent a follow-up email saying he understood my choice.

The next month passed in steady, quiet routine. I finished all my internship tasks flawlessly.

Then September arrived, and I traveled back to Halewood University to complete my senior year enrollment paperwork.

Only two months had gone by, yet dragging my rolling suitcase across campus felt like years had

passed.

That’s when I spotted him. Caspian camped out alone on the steps right in front of my dorm building.
