I Bit My Best Friend Until The System Spoiled Me Chapter 02

I Bit My Best Friend Until The System Spoiled Me Chapter 02

My mood had never been this foul.

Usually, getting my fix left me feeling satisfied, but not today. I’ve had this biting fixation since I was a kid. Before I even had the chance to tell my parents about it, Ethan found out.

Back in preschool, he had grabbed my chubby little wrist, completely ready to march me over to the teacher.

“Chloe, who bit you? Tell me, I’ll beat them up.”

I stared down at my teeth-marked wrist, trying my best to shrink back.

“I did it.”

I didn’t know how to explain it, but my teeth always felt… restless. It was the kind of itch that started in my jaw and worked its way straight into my heart, itching so intensely it made me want to cry.

But I didn’t dare tell my mom or dad.

I’d just watched a vampire movie the day before, and I was terrified someone was going to treat me like a monster for biting people.

Ethan stared at my hand. After a few seconds of silence, he extended his own small wrist toward me.

“You bit yourself so hard it left marks. That must hurt so much.”

“If you need to bite something, just bite me, Chloe. I’m a boy, I can take it.”

And that was how we did it—from preschool all the way to high school.

Until one winter, Ethan broke his arm playing basketball, and his left arm was put in a stiff cast.

I tapped the hard plaster, looking up at him.

“Does it hurt?”

Ethan didn’t answer. Instead, he reached up and slowly unzipped his high-neck sweater, exposing a pale, slender neck.

By then, his Adam’s apple had grown sharper and more prominent. He towerered over me now, but his skin still had that same porcelain paleness.”Chloe, bite here if you really have to. I’m wearing a high collar, so no one will see it.”

I gasped, staring at the bright crimson color flaring up at the tips of his ears, and shook my head violently.

“Biting your neck? That literally makes me a vampire! No way. Don’t you have a good arm?”The air went still for a few seconds before Ethan let out a soft cough.

“My right hand is for writing, and finals are coming up…”

So, that winter, the ever-so-kind Ethan sacrificed his neck.

The flesh on his neck wasn’t as thick as on his arm, but it was much softer.

His arms weren’t the soft, chubby little limbs from preschool anymore; they had filled out with lean, hard muscle that occasionally made my teeth ache when I bit down.

Besides, there was a tiny mole on the side of Ethan’s neck near his ear.

Whenever I rested my teeth there, it would turn a beautiful, flush pink.

Eventually, I accepted this setup and actually grew to love it.

It lasted until his mother caught him trying to wear high-neck sweaters in the dead of summer. After that, he made me switch from his neck to his shoulder.

[Do you know why he won’t let you bite his arms anymore?]

The system suddenly piped up.

Feeling entirely drained, I ignored it.

The system didn’t care whether I responded or not, happily continuing on its own.

[Because the Female Lead is going to put a hair scrunchie around his wrist later. Do you know what a scrunchie on a guy’s wrist means in romance novels?]

I pressed my hands over my ears in frustration.

I don’t know, and I don’t care! Shut up!

The system was startled by my sudden hostility.

[Whoa. You’re an NPC childhood best friend, you aren’t about to mutate into the psychotic mean girl now.]

Right as it started lecturing me on the horrific endings of every mean girl in fiction, the doorbell rang.

Ethan was standing on the front porch, holding a pastry tray.

Ethan had gotten a lot quieter as we grew up. He kept to himself mostly, but he was always uniquely gentle with me.His mom absolutely loved baking, and starting from freshman year, Ethan had made it a flawless daily routine to bring homemade pastries over to my house.

“Blueberry pie. My mom made it,” he said.

I stared at the tray, a small flicker of hope rising in my chest.

Ethan has been good to me my entire life. He would never let some random Female Lead twist him into throwing me to the wolves. Those villainess endings definitely won’t apply to me.

The system scoffed, completely unyielding.

[You’re completely blinded by your own perspective. The Male Lead is practically sick to death of you. If his mom didn’t force him to come over, you think he’d actually show up?]

[When you were clinging to him earlier, didn’t you notice how heavy and rough his breathing got? He was suppressing a mountain of rage just to tolerate you. If you don’t believe me, go ahead and test him yourself.]

Fine. Let’s test it.

As I reached out to take the tray from Ethan’s hands, I intentionally moved a bit closer.

The exact moment my fingers brushed against his fingertips, Ethan froze entirely.

In the next second, the tray clattered loudly onto the floor, and he took a sharp, sudden step back.

“Sorry, Chloe… my hand slipped.”

He hurriedly knelt down to clean up the ruined pie, the smile on my face freezing instantly.

The system relished in the moment..

[See that? He didn’t even look at you once. Look how fast he’s cleaning that up—he literally can’t wait to sprint away from your house.]

I watched him. His shoulders were so broad now, his back wide. He wasn’t a boy anymore.

Staring at the flushed red tips of his ears, a sudden wave of realization hit me. He had grown up so fast, so tall. Neither of us were those little kids from the sandbox anymore.

“Ethan, tell your mom thank you. And… I’ve been trying to watch my weight lately, so you don’t need to bring pastries over anymore.”

He looked up, his brows knitting tightly together.

“Lose weight? You’re not even heavy. Why are you trying to lose weight?”

My mood was completely ruined, so I just brushed him off half-heartedly.

“Anyway, I’m just not eating sweets anymore. Tell your mom to give the pies to someone else. Don’t bring them over.”

When Ethan left, his mood seemed incredibly dark.

The system chimed in with its expert advice.

[This is a psychological dependency. If you had just gone to therapy early on, you’d be cured by now, instead of constantly clinging to the Male Lead.]

[Did you see how distracted he looked when he left? Your nonsense is definitely messing with his head again.]

I lay back on my bed, staring at the ceiling in silence.

The next morning, Ethan and I walked toward school, one behind the other. My brain was completely fried.

Last night, the system had spent hours detailing hundreds of gruesome ways villainesses died, giving me nothing but vivid nightmares.

“Chloe, today you…”

Ethan, walking ahead of me, suddenly stopped and turned around. Caught completely off guard, I crashed face-first straight into his chest.

He instinctively caught my waist to keep me from tumbling backward.

Feeling the firm, confining grip around my waist, I lifted my head, only to meet Ethan’s rigid, frozen expression.
