I thought I wouldn’t be able to sleep.

But I lay in my mother’s bed, hugging her pillow.

Soon, drowsiness came over me.

My eyelids grew heavier and heavier.

When I opened my eyes again, the sky was completely dark.

For the first time in days, I had slept enough.

My body felt much better.

Then I turned over, and my tears suddenly broke through.

For the first time, I truly cried.

“Mom… I’m so scared…”

It was like when I was little and woke up unable to find Mom.

I would sit on the bed and wait.

But back then, my parents would hear me and run in, holding me in their arms and comforting me.

Now, no matter how loudly I cried, they couldn’t hear me.

Even if they could, they could no longer hold me.

I cried until my brain lacked oxygen and my ears buzzed.

I wanted to get up and wash my face, but I fell asleep again.

When I became conscious again, I was lying in a hospital bed.

My eyes were dry and sore.

My head felt like it was splitting open, and every bone in my body hurt.

Caleb Sterling sat beside the bed.

“Elena, you’re finally awake. You had a fever. You’ve been unconscious for three days.”

That long.

Why hadn’t I dreamed at all?

I closed my eyes.

I didn’t want to see Caleb Sterling.

He knew better than to speak again.

A week later, my fever finally stopped coming back.

My college results came out too.

Maybe my mother was helping me from heaven.

I said I didn’t want to go to Boston, and all the schools at the top of my list either waitlisted or rejected me.

In the end, I was accepted into the education program at a local state university.

Caleb Sterling was shocked and disappointed.

“How is that possible? We clearly chose several safety schools.”

He even suspected his parents had done something.

But they probably didn’t have enough power to control things to that degree.

“It’s okay. I’ll take a gap year with you. You didn’t perform well this time. Next year, you’ll definitely get into a better school.”

I laughed.

“A city valedictorian taking a gap year? Your parents would tear me apart. Young Mr. Sterling, please let me go.”

“We’ve already broken up. From now on, you take your bright future, and I’ll take my narrow road.”

Caleb froze again.

“No. You said we were getting married. You said it yourself.”

“I said that to piss off Ivy Harper. You actually believed it?”

My voice was cold.

“How could I marry the man who killed my mother?”

It was like he had been struck hard.

Then he gave a painful laugh.

“You’re right. I was delusional.”

“You shouldn’t forgive me. I’m guilty.”

But he would never be punished.

“I don’t want to see you again.”

He nodded.

He wanted to say something but stopped.

Then he walked out, lonely and defeated.

Until the end of summer, he really didn’t show up again.

But fruits, vegetables, and all kinds of food and necessities often appeared outside my door.

When school was about to start, school supplies appeared too.

Then Caleb Sterling knocked on the door.

“I was afraid the laptop and phone would get stolen if I left them outside.”

He also left a card.

It was compensation from his parents, enough to cover all four years of college.

“I put my birthday money and holiday money from childhood in there too.”

“Elena…”

He suddenly fell silent again.

He probably wanted to say “I’m sorry.”

But he had said it too many times.

The words only sounded paler.

“I’m leaving.”

“Take care of yourself. Eat more. You’re too thin.”
