At 7:50 a.m., the taxi pulled up to North Crane News Tower.

I rushed to the TV department on the eighteenth floor. Celine was walking out of the director’s office in a red dress, smiling sweetly.

I was confused when the director’s secretary held up a document.

The next second, she announced loudly.

“Everyone, due to work needs, the company has decided to transfer Renee to the blog department starting today.”

“The primetime anchor spot will be taken by Celine. Most of you know her—she’s an Oscarwinning actress.”

I’d been reassigned out of nowhere.

My mind went blank. A bonechilling cold shot up from my feet to my head.

The secretary gave me an apologetic look and added.

“This was arranged personally by Don Zayne. This year’s Journalist of the Year award will also go to Celine.”

The Bellandi Family controlled every major news and media outlet in Rome City.

NY Television was directly owned by the Bellandis.

I took a deep breath and held back my tears.

I set the coffee I’d brought on the desk and smiled.

“Drinks on me. Since I didn’t win, let’s just celebrate my transfer.”

None of the coworkers who usually swarmed for free coffee moved.

Celine stepped down the stairs and curled her red lips.

“Hi, everyone! I’m here to experience office life so I can play my role better.”

“Coffee and pastries on me. Please take good care of me.”

Celine handed out the drinks herself. The room immediately came alive.

There wasn’t enough space on the table. She threw all thirtytwo cups of my coffee into the trash.

She turned around and held out a small matcha cake to me.

Her eyes were sharp and triumphant.

“You must be Renee. Sorry I took your job and your award.”

“I heard cake makes people feel better. Want one to cheer up?”

My throat felt stuffed with cotton.

Dry and suffocating. I couldn’t say a word.
