“Renee.”

Zayne followed me inside.

His eyes darkened. He stared sharply at my stomach.

“The noble Bellandi Family doesn’t want a bastard.”

“You’ve been with me all these years. You know exactly what happens if you get pregnant without permission.”

My breath caught. I quickly moved my hand away from my belly.

I lifted my head and tried to act calm.

“I didn’t sleep last night. I probably just caught a cold.”

He frowned slightly and turned to leave.

I let out a heavy breath.

I’d felt sick yesterday and went to the hospital. The doctor told me I was pregnant.

Counting back, it had been about two months ago—on Zayne’s birthday. He said he didn’t want to use protection.

I’d been so worn out I could barely keep my eyes open.

I forgot to take my birth control.

I’d planned to tell him that day.

Now it didn’t matter.

Like he said, the great Bellandi Family would never accept a bastard.

I’d seen what they were capable of six years ago.

Zayne’s older brother had a mistress who was a model overseas. She got pregnant. The moment the baby was born, both she and the child vanished.

Someone sent photos of the scene to my email.

I looked once and had nightmares for a month.

I gently touched the tiny black dot, then crumpled the paper and threw it in the trash.
