He Sent Me a Blanket but Hugged His Intern in Bed Chapter 05

Spencer had appeared at my bedside, still holding Amber’s billing slip.

His gaze swept over the blood-soaked sheets. For one second, panic Rashed across his face.

Then that familiar impatience hardened his expression again.

“Natalie, you faked contractions last month just to get my attention. And now you’ve cooked up this hemorrhage stunt with the nurses?”

I stared at him as if he were a stranger.

“Faked?”

I laughed — a broken sound, tears and sweat running into my pillow.

“You’re right. I’m faking it.”

The nurse shoved him back.

“Are you blind or just stupid? She’s hemorrhaging! Can’t you smell the blood?”

He staggered, his face cycling through confusion.

“I’m her husband.”

“Then sign the damn form!”

The nurse slapped the papers against his chest.

“She needs emergency surgery,” the nurse snapped. “There’s massive bleeding. If we can’t control it, the

doctors may have to perform a hysterectomy to save her life.”

Spencer stared at the page, frozen.

Behind him, Amber tugged at his sleeve.

“Mr. Cole… I feel dizzy… am I going to die?”

He turned instinctively and steadied her.

“Amber’s squeamish. I need to get her to a room first.”

He glanced back at me, his tone clipped with irritation.

“Natalie, listen to the doctors. I’ll be right back after I settle her. Don’t do anything stupid with the baby.”

Then he half-carried Amber toward the elevator, never looking back.

I watched the doors slide shut.

In that moment, I heard something inside me shatter for good.

I took the pen from the nurse’s hand and signed my name on the consent form, one letter at a time.

“Doctor.”

I stared at the white ceiling, my voice barely a whisper.

“Take me in. If anything goes wrong… don’t resuscitate.”

I woke up three days later in the ICU.

The beep of the monitor was steady and monotonous. The anesthesia hadn’t fully worn off, and a searing pain cut across my lower abdomen.

I reached for my belly.

Flat.

Tears flooded my eyes.

A nurse noticed I was awake and hurried over.

“Ms. Grant, you’re finally awake.”

Her eyes were red-rimmed.

“It’s a boy. He was born too early-barely three pounds. He’s in the NICU right now.”

“You were lucky. We had to remove your uterus to stop the bleeding, but you made it.”

I closed my eyes and let the tears run into my hair.

“Thank you.”

The nurse hesitated.

“Your family… no one has come to see you in three days. Should I call anyone?”

I shook my head.

“I don’t have family.”

When I was moved to a regular room, I got my phone back.

When I powered it on, messages flooded in-all from Spencer.

Day one:

[Natalie, are you done yet? Amber only cut her finger. You had to make it about jealousy? What room are you in?]

Day two:

[Why did you block me? Fine. Hide. See how long you can keep this up.]

Day three:

[Natalie, I saw the divorce papers. What do you mean, giving up everything? Is this some kind of threat? Stop

this nonsense and come home. We’ll talk.]

I read them all and felt nothing.

No anger. No hurt. Just a dead, hollow silence.

He still believed that night in the ER had been some elaborate cry for attention.

He still thought the divorce papers were just a bargaining chip.

I didn’t reply.

I deleted his contact, then called Attorney Miller.

“Miller, he’s seen the agreement. He’s refusing to sign.”

“I understand. Let’s proceed with the litigation. And please arrange to transfer my son to a hospital in

Ashford. I’m relocating.”

I hung up and looked out the window.

The snow had stopped. The sky was clear.

Back in Fairhaven, Spencer sat alone in the empty living room.

The divorce agreement-with my signature already on it-lay on the coffee table.

He tore off his tie and tossed it aside.

His assistant stood trembling by the door.

“Mr. Cole… I checked with the hospital.”

“Mrs. Cole wasn’t faking.”

Spencer’s head snapped up.

“What did you say?”

The assistant swallowed.

“She had placental abruption. Massive bleeding. They had to remove her uterus to save her life. The baby is

still in the NICU.”

Spencer’s face drained of all color.

He shot to his feet, knocking over the coffee table. Glass shattered across the floor.

“Say that again.”

His voice came out raw, like something clawing out of a grave.

“Remove… her uterus?”

He staggered backward and collapsed onto the sofa.

He remembered that night in the ER.

How he’d been so fixated on Amber’s tiny cut-a scratch that didn’t even need stitches.

How she’d tugged his sleeve and said she felt dizzy.

And how he’d told Natalie, “Don’t do anything stupid with the baby.”

His hands began to shake violently.

He grabbed his keys and ran out the door like a man possessed.
