I Lost My Baby, He Became Her Hero Chapter 06

I Lost My Baby, He Became Her Hero Chapter 06

That afternoon, I filed a civil complaint over the concealed marital assets and submitted the

criminal evidence to the police and district attorney.

Reporters packed the courthouse steps when I came outside.

Cameras and microphones pointed at me from every direction.

Flashes burst across my face.

“Ms. Bennett, do you have proof Adrian helped cause his unborn daughter’s death?”

“You and Vanessa Moore were best friends. When did she enter your marriage?”

“Which side is your mother supporting?”

I stopped and faced the cameras. “All evidence has been submitted to the proper authorities. I trust

the courts and investigators to uncover the truth.”

Then I climbed into a cab and shut the door.

The story exploded online within minutes.

Cole Holdings issued an emergency public statement.

[Our founder and CEO, Adrian Cole, has been maliciously defamed by his former wife, Natalie

Bennett.]

[Her allegations of adultery, concealed assets, and intentional harm are entirely false. Ms. Bennett

is retaliating because she was dissatisfied with the divorce settlement.]

[Cole Holdings has retained counsel and will file a defamation counterclaim.]

The comment section erupted.

[They called her the mistress yesterday. Why are they admitting she was his wife now?]

[Who’s lying?]

[Mr. Cole should fight back. That crazy woman belongs in jail.]

The two sides clashed online in an all-out war of words.

By the next morning, hundreds of unread messages filled my phone. Some insulted me and others tried to doxx me, but far more came from people offering their support.

People shared the case everywhere.

Strangers built detailed timeline graphics and reposted them across every platform.

Cole Holdings’ verified X account was flooded with angry comments.

I had just set down my phone when the doorbell rang.

Adrian stood outside.

His voice sounded exhausted, as if he hadn’t slept. “Natalie, what do you want?”

I considered the question. “Justice.”

He stared at me and pressed his lips together. “Justice? You think this spectacle can hurt me? I can make your lawyer drop the case with one phone call. I can make this city close every door to you.”

“I can…”

“Adrian.” I cut him off. “Do you ever dream about Millie? I mean our daughter.”

He turned his face away.

His throat moved as he swallowed.

Watching him brought back a memory from years earlier.

We’d been eating instant noodles in our tiny rental.

Adrian suddenly set down his fork and looked at me seriously.

“When we have a daughter, I’ll make her the happiest girl in the world.”

I laughed at him. “You can barely support yourself.”

“I’ll work harder.”

He tucked a damp strand of hair behind my ear. “You’ll bring her into the world. I’ll spoil her.”

“I’ll braid her hair, buy her princess dresses, and fight anyone who hurts her.”

His eyes had shone with hope.

I’d never seen him look gentler.

Back then, I believed that future belonged to us.

Now it was gone…

“Stop calling it an accident.” I held his gaze. “You knew something was wrong that day. Otherwise, you never would’ve written that note.”

His lashes trembled as his jaw tightened.

“Enough.” His voice was low and rough. “Vanessa isn’t that kind of person.”

Not that kind of person.

I studied the face I’d watched for ten years, one whose every frown, smile, flash of anger, and trade of exhaustion I knew, yet the man before me felt like a stranger.

Once, he would rather hurt himself than let anyone hurt me.

He had once told me, “Everyone else can doubt me, but you can’t.”

Now he trusted everyone except me.

No. Maybe he had never truly trusted Vanessa either.

He simply couldn’t admit the woman he’d loved for seven years could do something so cruel.

Admitting it meant facing the price of everything he’d abandoned for her.

That price was our daughter’s life.

A bitter laugh left me. “Adrian, you only had to tell me you didn’t love me. I would’ve divorced you immediately.”

“I don’t hate you for cheating. I hate you for falling in love with someone else and still spending seven years pretending to love me.”

“Adrian, I hate you.”

He said nothing.

The hallway fell silent, broken only by muffled sobs,

I slowly closed the door.
