Alpha, I Won’t Be Your Luna Again Chapter 08

Three days later, I was discharged.

The first thing I did was head down to the local police precinct with Elowen to give a statement.

Outside the interrogation room, I could hear a woman’s shrill crying inside.

“I didn’t mean to! I really didn’t MEAN to!”

When the investigator opened the door and let me in, Lillian was sitting in a chair, her hair a mess, her makeup smeared — a far cry from the delicate, fragile picture she used to be.

The moment she saw me, she shot up, her voice cracking.

“Mira, what do you WANT? It’s just a bracelet! I said I’d give it back!”

I set my bag on the table and pulled out a few photos, laying them down one by one.

The first — a screenshot of her Instagram Story from her birthday. An emerald bracelet on her wrist.

The second — a photo of my mother, alive, wearing that same bracelet.

The third — surveillance footage of her getting it appraised at a pawnshop after the incident.

Lillian’s face went white.

“I was just… trying it on for fun —”

The investigator scoffed.

“Trying it on all the way to a pawnshop?”

I slid another document forward.

“And this.”

The investigator picked it up and read it aloud.

“Per voiceprint analysis, the female background voice in the 911 verification callback is a high match to Lillian herself. The statement was —”

He looked up at her.

“She’s a drama queen, don’t send a truck, leave her stewing overnight and she’ll settle down.”

The room went dead quiet.

Lillian’s lips trembled.

“I… I just said it offhand… I never thought anything would actually happen…”

I finally spoke.

“You never wanted me dead?”

“You just wanted me trapped in that house. You wanted me to suffer, to watch Nathan choose you, to lose completely. Right?”

She glared at me, tears rolling down, and a few seconds later she snapped.

“So WHAT!”

“I knew him FIRST! Why did YOU get to marry him?!”

“He cares about me more, YOU’RE the one who kept hogging that spot!”

“How was I supposed to know you were actually pregnant?! How was I supposed to know the fire would get that big?”

The second the last line left her mouth, the investigator taking notes looked up.

I looked at her.

“So you admit you knew I was calling for help.”

She froze, her face draining white.

“No, that’s not what I meant —”

The investigator snapped the notebook shut.

“Write it down.”

Lillian panicked completely and jumped to her feet.

“I didn’t say anything! I didn’t —”

“Sit down.” His voice was sharp. “Lillian, you’re suspected of misappropriating property, giving false statements, and joint liability. Cooperate with the investigation!”

Her legs gave out and she collapsed back into the chair.

I picked up my bag and stood to leave.

Behind me she cried out, “Mira! You’re determined to destroy every part of my life!”

I didn’t stop walking.

“The one who ruined you isn’t me.”
