My Husband’s Ghost Lover Chapter 02

My Husband’s Ghost Lover Chapter 02

Saving his life was essentially what won Makayla Alonzo’s undying devotion.
According to Alonzo, she’d thrown herself in front of a van to save him from being hit, and she was left horribly mangled in the process.
From then on, he was consumed by guilt over this college junior who had secretly loved him for years.
When we were newly married and he first saw Makayla’s ghost, his usual calm, collected mask shattered right away.
He tried to embrace her, only for his arms to pass right through her body.
Since she couldn’t stray far from Alonzo, he quickly made up his mind.
“I don’t know why you can see her too, Jazlyn, but let’s sleep in separate rooms for now. It’s not appropriate under the circumstances.”
At first, I had no idea about Makayla’s old crush on him. I only knew that she had, in fact, saved my husband’s life.
Besides, this surreal situation was entirely beyond my control.
So, I agreed to his suggestion.
And just like that, Makayla infiltrated every corner of our lives.
When we went out for candlelit dinners, Alonzo would order three meals and reserve three seats.
“What are you doing? You know I can’t eat any of this right now.
“I can’t just let you sit there and watch us.”
The atmosphere had become suffocatingly familiar.
From date nights to our most private moments, everything was spoiled by her hanging around.
The constant awkwardness wore me down until, eventually, I just stopped caring.
I did try to fix this.
“A friend of mine knows a specialist who deals with the paranormal. They might be able to help us figure out what’s going on. Things can’t stay like this forever.”
But Alonzo flew into a rage. “Jazlyn, do you really get off on being jealous of a dead girl?
“She died saving my life, and you’d just let her soul be scattered into nothing?
“I only meant to give her a proper place to move around. It doesn’t have to end with her vanishing.
“I won’t hear another word. Don’t ever say something so heartless again.”
He refused to talk it through, so I fell silent.
Watching me blink back tears, Alonzo eventually sighed.
He looked as if he wanted to pull me into his arms, but when he saw the timid Makayla beside him, he only patted my head.
“Jazlyn, I was too harsh just now.
“But Kayla isn’t an outsider. Honestly, without her, I might not even be alive today.
“Can you try to understand?”
Could I? I really didn’t have an answer for that.
Whenever Makayla was involved, we always ended up in a miserable fight.
What was worse was that I had no one to talk to—no one could see her except for Alonzo and me.
To the rest of the world, he was still the perfect husband. But I knew the truth.
If I asked for a divorce, could I really tell people I was doing it because of a woman who didn’t exist to anyone else?
Then, on my birthday, I accidentally found a receipt in his pocket.
It was a dress I’d had my eye on for ages.
A mutual friend had even hinted that he had been secretly planning a surprise for me lately.
The knot that had been tightening in my chest finally loosened a little. For the first time in forever, I actually found myself looking forward to going home.
Maybe I shouldn’t have let my guard down so easily, but Alonzo was the same guy I’d had a crush on since I first started my career.
When he first confessed his feelings and we got together, he had been so good to me. I truly cherished every moment of it.
But when I opened the door, Makayla was floating in front of me like a butterfly, wearing that very dress.
“Jazzy, do you think this dress suits me? Alonzo keeps saying it looks nice, but I think he’s just humoring me.
“I thought I wouldn’t be able to change clothes after I died, but Alonzo helped me into it, and it actually fits!
“His hands are so warm… It’s the only warmth I’ve felt since I died.”
I stared blankly at her as she chattered away.
After a long silence, I finally managed to speak, my voice hoarse. “So… that dress wasn’t for me?”
Alonzo glanced at me with complete indifference. “Why would I buy it for you? It isn’t even a special occasion.
“Today is the anniversary of the day Kayla saved my life. I have to find a way to replace the pain of that day with happy memories.”
It was the first time he had ever forgotten my birthday.
Even when he offered to buy me another one if I liked it so much, I still refused.
The dress that had once made my heart race now felt unbearable to even look at.
Once again, the thought of asking Alonzo for a divorce crossed my mind.
