My Husband’s Ghost Lover Chapter 01

My Husband’s Ghost Lover Chapter 01

Since marrying Alonzo Plumridge five years ago, I’ve watched Makayla Tudbury’s ghost dog his every step, single day after single day.
He said she had died saving his life, that I shouldn’t hold it against her.
I could do nothing but watch, helpless, as Alonzo held her, kissed her, even lay with her like she was alive.
Eventually, his life force was slipping away, his health crumbling a little more each day.
Meanwhile, I hung out with my friends all day and even earned several promotions.
One day, in between coughing up blood, he asked me, “Why don’t you care about me anymore? Aren’t you scared I’ll die just to go be with her in heaven?”
I smiled. “Didn’t you say the living can never compete with the dead? Well, I’m not competing anymore.”

The project had finally wrapped up, so for the first time in a long while, I dined out to celebrate with my colleagues.
By the time I returned home, it was already late.
The apartment curtains were still tightly drawn, with only a thin sliver of light seeping through.
Ever since Makayla’s ghost appeared, this had become our new normal.
Bright light hurt her.
Because of that, Alonzo kept the lights off whenever possible. At night, he relied on a single desk lamp, carefully dimmed.
“This should be enough,” he would say.
I pushed the door open and found him and Makayla curled up together. Her ghostly form hovered just above the ground, her chin resting lightly on his shoulder.
As her lips brushed against his cheek, he froze but made no move to push her away.
The room was so dark that I accidentally hit the light switch.
In an instant, brightness flooded the space.
Makayla let out a soft gasp and quickly hid behind Alonzo, peeking at me with wary eyes.
Alonzo’s expression darkened as he shot me a glare. “You’re out gallivanting till midnight, then you storm in throwing a fit? What’s your problem?
“Jazlyn Lyddington, do you even remember you have a husband?”
I didn’t answer immediately. Instead, my gaze lingered on the dark circles beneath his eyes.
I couldn’t help wondering what the two of them were doing in the room every night. How come he looked sleep-deprived almost every single day?
And now, he was taking it out on me? Unbelievable.
After a brief silence, I reached out and turned the light off.
“Sorry, I couldn’t see what I was doing while changing my shoes. It was an accident.”
But his expression only grew colder.
He crossed the distance between us in three quick strides, Makayla stumbling along at his side until she hovered right in front of me.
“Why can’t you just say what’s on your mind? I’ve been looking after Kayla all day. Can you stop being difficult?”
“I already turned the light off, didn’t I? You said she can’t stand bright places. I did exactly what you wanted.”
Alonzo’s chest heaved with anger.
Makayla reached out, her translucent hand resting against him in a soothing gesture.
“Jazzy’s busy with work, and she has such an active social life. It must be exhausting dealing with so many people every day. You’re her husband, not a stranger. Of course she shows you her worst side.
“If you’re still upset, then tonight, before we go to bed, I’ll tell you about the visions I saw right before I died.”
Alonzo’s expression softened a bit. He placed his hand over his chest, gently touching the hand resting on him.
I raised an eyebrow.
He could actually feel Makayla’s form now.
The two of them continued talking, completely ignoring me.
I grew bored watching them, so I stretched and headed back to my room to get some sleep.
“Is Jazzy mad again?” Makayla asked.
“She has no right to be mad at my savior,” Alonzo snapped.
