Mom Came Back From the Dead to Warn Me About the Boy I Almost Chose Chapter 09

I let go of Elias and called out for Mom in my mind, 

over and over. 

But no matter how hard I tried, she didn’t answer. 

That was when I understood. 

She had seen that I now had someone who truly cared 

about me. Someone who could stay by my side when Dad was away on missions. 

So… she had finally let go. 

On the third day after Mom disappeared, Dad took Elias 

and me to visit her grave. 

After we placed flowers down, Dad said softly, “You 

two head back first. I want a moment alone with your 

mom.” 

Elias and I exchanged a look and quietly stepped away, 

waiting at a distance. 

Dad gently brushed his hand over the headstone, his 

voice softer than I had ever heard it. 

“A couple nights ago, you came to me in a dream. You 

said that in another life, Claire chose the wrong brother 

and didn’t grow up happy. You used all the good you’d 

accumulated in your life to give her another chance… 

just so she could be happy this time.” 

He let out a small breath. 

“You always overthink everything,” he murmured. “But don’t worry. As long as I’m still here, I’ll protect our daughter. And if one day I’m gone… Elias will take care of her. So you can rest easy.” 

He talked for a long time, quietly, like she could still 

hear him. 

Before leaving, he gave the headstone a gentle pat. “We’ll come see you again next year.” 

Five years passed in the blink of an eye. 

Elias and I were both in high school now, but nothing between us had changed. We were still just as close. 

The three–person tradition of visiting Mom’s grave had gained a new member this year. 

Our adopted cat, Taffy. 

Elias held Taffy carefully as he crouched in front of the 

headstone. 

I smiled and spoke softly, “Mom, this is our cat, Taffy. We hope her life will be as sweet as her name.” 

Taffy looked around curiously in his arms, wide–eyed 

and adorable. 

Not far away, a butterfly landed briefly on the headstone… then lifted off, disappearing into the bright blue sky.
