When I reached the front of the apartment building, I saw Noah standing not far away.

I had known about him for a long time.

It was hard not to. His family was powerful, his grades were exceptional, and he had the kind of face that looked like it had broken too many hearts.

But somehow, a guy like that had never dated anyone.

When freshman year had just started, Chloe had asked someone to get his WhatsApp for her.

She had been sure that with her looks, she could win him over.

Noah rejected her.

For a long time after that, no one in our apartment dared mention his name.

And now, Noah was waiting for me.

He held his phone and typed so fast his fingers almost blurred.

He looked impatient.

I walked up to him and said without thinking, “Sorry. Did you wait long?”

He clicked his tongue.

Then he looked up.

He seemed about to say something, but the second he saw me, his eyes paused.

“You’re Emma?”

I nodded.

He went quiet for a moment, then his tone turned strange.

“My brother’s ex-girlfriend?”

I froze.

It took me a while to realize he might mean Julian.

I had only dated once.

But I had never connected Julian with the word ex-boyfriend, so I hesitated before asking, “You mean Julian?”

He nodded.

“Yeah.”

“Not many people at school know he’s my brother, so keep that quiet.”

I said okay.

Then he took out a check.

“He told me to give you this.”

Only then did I remember that Julian had said he would have someone give me compensation.

I didn’t hesitate. I took it.

Just then, Noah’s phone rang.

I stood close enough to see the name on the screen.

Julian.

Noah didn’t avoid me. He answered right away, dragging out his voice.

“Hello.”

The other end went quiet for a moment.

“Did you see her?”

Under the moonlight, Noah lifted his eyes. His gaze stayed on my face for two seconds.

He said, “Saw her. Gave her the thing too.”

I froze.

Only then did I understand that Julian had been asking whether Noah had seen me.

I didn’t want to hear anymore.

I quietly left.
