Julian had mistaken me for someone else.

All the tenderness and attention meant for Chloe had gone to me instead.

And he had ignored the girl he actually wanted.

A breeze swept past. He leaned against his car, rubbed the space between his brows, and gave me a helpless look.

“Go back first. I’ll message you tonight.”

I held back the tears burning in my eyes.

“Okay.”

But I understood perfectly.

There were things he didn’t want to say to my face because it would be too humiliating.

When I got back to the student apartment, no one was there.

I climbed into bed and slept hard.

Noise woke me up.

Chloe stood in the middle of the room, holding a huge bouquet of roses.

Our other two roommates were talking loudly.

“So he mistook her for someone else. I knew it. How could anyone ignore you and fall for Emma Reed instead?”

Chloe smiled softly.

“It was just a misunderstanding.”

Then she looked at me.

“Emma, let me apologize for Julian. You won’t mind, right?”

I sat up and pretended nothing had happened.

“I don’t mind.”

She smiled again. “Right. You only dated him for two months, and it was online. You probably didn’t like him that much anyway.”
