I Caught My Don Husband Cheating With My 18-Year Best Friend At The Car Chapter 01

I Caught My Don Husband Cheating With My 18-Year Best Friend At The Car Chapter 01

On the drive back to Crest City after our Christmas trip, I used my best friend Lucy Wood’s phone to upload photos to the cloud.

Her phone automatically connected to my mafia husband Lorenzo Romano’s car hotspot.

I froze for a second, but didn’t think much of it.

Just then, Lorenzo walked back holding two drinks.

One iced Americano, one hot cocoa.

Lucy took the coffee from his hand naturally, then complained loudly.

“The weather’s so hot, why’d you get Mia iced coffee and only get me something hot?”

That’s just how they were always bickering back and forth.

But Lorenzo’s next sentence made my mind go completely blank.

“Quit being harsh. You’ve had insomnia for weeks, you know that.”

Lucy immediately chased after him, swatting his arm.

“Who are you calling mean?!”

I watched them bolt away, one hot on the other’s heels.

I knew it then.

My husband of three years and my friend of eighteen years were together.

I stared at the time ticking by on my phone.

Five minutes and forty-seven seconds later, they came back into view.

Lucy ran over and threw her arms around me.

“Donna, control Lorenzo! He said my face is as red as ketchup on a taco. Say something for me, will you?”

Normally, I’d laugh and warn Lorenzo to stop picking on Lucy.

But this time, I caught a faint woody tea scent on her.

It was the cologne I’d gotten Lorenzo for his birthday.

My stomach turned. I pushed her away gently.

Meeting her confused gaze, I acted like nothing was wrong.

“Let’s get going. Otherwise we won’t get back to Crest City until dark.”

I didn’t call them out right then.

My brain turned to total mush, nothing but crumpled, torn scraps of thought.

The cold of the iced coffee seeped through my palm and into my chest.

As soon as we got in the car, Lucy kicked off her heels like she owned the place and slipped into the spare slippers in the passenger seat.

She got carsick bad, always complaining about feeling nauseous in the back.

Gradually, the front seat became hers exclusively.

I remembered once when Lorenzo’s sister Giovanna rode with us and saw those slippers.

She didn’t say it outright.

Just gave me a meaningful warning.

“Lorenzo’s the head of the Romano family. He doesn’t have time to memorize other women’s preferences.”

Back then, I actually thought it was because of me.

That Lorenzo was only accommodating Lucy for my sake.

I glanced toward the front seat again.

Lucy slung her arm lazily over the center console.

Her forearm kept brushing Lorenzo’s bare wrist, over and over.

Neither flinched.

No hint of awkwardness crossed either of their faces.

Lucy paired with the car Bluetooth effortlessly and put on music.

She cranked the volume up, pretending to hold a mic and singing along at the top of her lungs.

Lorenzo usually dealt with complex shipping routes and cleaning up family traitors, stuff that gave him constant headaches.

So his car always played soothing classical music.

But somewhere along the way, that changed.

Not just his taste in music—his car started filling up with Lucy’s things.

Slippers.

Her favorite drinks.

After a while, Lucy’s voice went hoarse from singing.

Lorenzo reached into the glove compartment and handed her a bottle of water.

Lucy raised an eyebrow, teasing him on purpose.

“Is the mighty Don Romano sick of my singing? Trying to shut me up?”

Lorenzo paused for a beat.

“I need to hear the navigation. Be quiet for a minute.”

Lucy leaned in closer, her lips almost touching his cheek.

“Not a chance.”

Flirty lyrics dripped from her red lips.

The words were bold, straight to the point.

She wasn’t a good singer, not by a long shot—but Lorenzo’s knuckles whitened on the steering wheel.

His ears turned pink, just a little.

Lorenzo glanced at her, expression unreadable.

He pushed her shoulder back into her seat.

“Sit still and stop moving. It’s dangerous.”

“Tell me. Do I sound good?”

Suddenly, only the music from the speakers filled the air.

In that split second of silence between the song’s verses, I caught it.

I heard a quiet, soft yes echo through the speakers.

Thinking back to Giovanna’s warning, I finally realized.

I was the one who pushed them together.

My face kept getting paler. By the next toll booth, Lorenzo finally noticed something was off.

“Mia? You okay?”

When I kept my head down and didn’t answer, he raised his voice a little.

“Mia? Hey, talk to me.”

I stared at the man in front of me in a daze.

My eyes burned.

Lucy laughed and swatted his back.

“Back off my girl. Stay away from my baby.”

She’d said that a million times.

Always claimed she was jealous of Lorenzo, that she fought him for my attention.

Today I finally understood.

The person she was really jealous of.

Was me.
