I hung up before they could respond.

Soon, she called back. I didn’t answer. Without hesitation, I pulled out my SIM card and dropped it in the trash.

Leonardo’s messages were flooding the tablet’s iMessage. I didn’t read a single one. I deleted and

blocked.

Then the boarding announcement called. I strode forward, ready for a new life.

A string of red exclamation marks on the screen. Leonardo’s heart sank.

Beside him, Cecilia saw his face and assumed he was angry at the girl’s audacity. She lifted her hand, reached for his arm, and said, “Leo, don’t be mad. With people like that, just give her some

money-if worst comes to worst, you can send your guys to her house, hold a gun to her head, and

make her return it-”

Before she could finish, Leonardo violently shoved her away. Cecilia screamed and fell backward.

Her head was about to hit the table’s edge when he yanked her back and grabbed her throat,

squeezing hard.

His voice was ice. “Did you do that on purpose?”

Cecilia choked, her face red, her eyes wide with terror. “Wh-what?”

He leaned in. “I asked you-did you deliberately send that tablet to her?”

She shook her head desperately. He pressed harder. “Do you know who bought it?”

“Her?”

He said each word slowly. “She’s my fiancée.”

Cecilia’s eyes widened. “No-I didn’t know-it was an accident-”

His eyes were bloodshot. His fingers tightened. Cecilia could feel him meaning to kill her. She managed to choke out, “Instead of-arguing with me-you should go home-and explain to your fiancée-”

Cecilia lowered her head, her shoulders trembling. She didn’t say a word.

Leonardo strode away.

He ran every red light, racing back to the apartment.

“Emily? Emily!”

He shouted as he searched every room. But Emily wasn’t there. And not just her-everything that belonged to Emily was gone. She’d left.

The moment this thought surfaced, Leonardo froze in place. A chill spread from his head to hís

toes.

After a long while, he finally remembered what Emily had said at the end of that last call. He walked slowly to the living room. The tablet was on the coffee table.

It looked familiar. Then it hit him-it had appeared the day Emily bought the platinum bag. She’d

known all along. No wonder she’d changed so suddenly.

He reached for the tablet, ready to smash this culprit to pieces-when a glint of silver caught the corner of his eye. His pupils contracted. He stared at the trash can for a long time before bending down. With trembling fingers, he picked up a diamond ring.

Inside the band, engraved stars circled around. The engagement ring he’d given Emily.
