He Missed My Emergency To Deliver Her Dog’s Puppies Chapter 07

“No child of mine is going to be raised by a woman like that.”

He started dialing my parents’ number. Arthur snatched the phone out of his hand.

“Julian, stop. Clara’s expose has already been verified online. The video, the screenshots, none of it is fake. It’s all real.”

“You’re the one who cheated. You got caught. Own it.”

“Her parents died. She lost the baby. Haven’t you put her through enough?”

“And instead of being with her, you’re here throwing a party for another woman. You just trashed her dead parents in front of everyone. She’s your wife, Julian. Not your enemy.”

Julian didn’t move. He stared at Arthur like the words hadn’t reached him yet.

“Is that… is that true?”

Arthur’s expression changed. He looked more shocked than Julian.

“Don’t tell me you didn’t know. About the miscarriage. About the accident. About her parents. You seriously didn’t know?”

Julian knew Arthur well. He wasn’t the kind of man who’d joke about something like this.

Julian grabbed Arthur’s arm. His voice broke.

“When? When did it happen?”

“May 9th. Afternoon. The ambulance brought her in from Oakridge Boulevard. She’d stepped into traffic, like she was in a daze, and a motorcycle hit her. She started hemorrhaging. Lost the baby.”

“Her parents got the call and drove through the storm to get to her. They didn’t make it. Her father died at the scene. Her mom barely made it to the ER.”

“Her mom’s injuries were massive. Combine that with her medical history—which you know better than anyone—and the surgery was impossible. Every senior attending was either scrubbed in or out of town. I told Clara you were the only one who could’ve given her mom a chance.”

“She called you more than seventy times. You didn’t pick up once.”

Arthur paused. The memory was still raw on his face.

“She was still on the table herself when they brought her the consent forms. She signed them for her own mom, Julian. With blood on her hands.”

“By the time you finally got back to her, it was over. Her mom didn’t make it. The baby was already gone.”

“I don’t know why she never told you. But I’ll never forget watching her on her knees outside the OR, screaming. Half the nurses on the floor were crying with her.”

Every drop of color had drained from Julian’s face.

He probably told himself that couldn’t be right.

I had tried to tell him.

Seventy-six calls. Death certificates poking out of my bag.

My voice cracking in the pet shop, screaming the truth in his face.

If he’d asked one more question. If he’d stopped for even a second to check.

But he didn’t.

Julian was smart enough to piece together the rest on his own.

The street where I was hit. The exact same street as the restaurant.

The restaurant where I watched my husband—the one who should’ve been at my checkup—kiss someone else.

He probably couldn’t even begin to imagine what it felt like. Losing the baby. Losing both parents. All of it, alone.

No wonder I’d broken down over the sweater.

No wonder I’d looked at him like that before I left. Like I was already gone.

He’d seen it that morning, when he was putting ointment on my face. The disgust in my eyes. He’d seen it clearly.

He’d told himself I was just angry. That I’d get over it.

But by then, I was already done with him.

“Julian, are you okay?”

He was swaying on his feet. Stella moved to steady him.
