Harrison acted like he didn’t see me crying.

His voice was flat.

“Lena. Same trick twice? That’s boring.”

He set me down and turned to leave.

I threw my arms around him.

He tried to push me away, but I held on tighter, clinging to him like an octopus.

We lost our balance and fell to the ground.

Harrison caught my head before it hit the dirt, growling.

“Let go. What is wrong with you?”

“No!”

I fisted my hands in his shirt, eyes red.

“Harrison, I have to say this.”

“I started this to get back at Sloane. But somewhere along the way, I fell for you. For real. I love you.”

He glared at me.

Then he looked away, his whole body deflating.

I heard him curse for the first time.

“Fuck.”

I rolled up my sleeve, showing him all the scars, tears running down my face.

“She scalded me with boiling water, pressed cigarette burns into my skin, took those photos of me, and got my grandma killed.”

“Harrison, was I not supposed to hate her for that?!”

“I already hesitated, back at the end. I couldn’t go through with it without caring about you.”

“You don’t have to forgive me. You can yell at me. But I love you. That part was never a lie.”

The cold look on Harrison’s face shattered the second he saw the scars.

His fingers brushed over them, very gently.

He sighed, like he was admitting defeat.

“Same old tricks. You think I didn’t know you got yourself rained on and sick on purpose that night? Played the poor little hurt thing?”

“You little liar. You just know I’ll fall for it every single time, don’t you?”

I cupped his face in my hands.

“Then will you let me keep lying to you?”

The wind rustled the leaves in the sunset.

The clouds over the mountains parted, revealing a pale moon.

He kissed me.

“Fine, you win.”

“But this time—lie to me for the rest of our lives.”

Off in the distance, one of the fishing rods doubled over.

A fish was on the line.

But no one was holding it.

Soon it ate all the bait and got away.

I laughed.
