I stayed up all night going through his profile.

His life was boringly simple.

Dark ripples stirred by mountain wind across a deep mountain pool. I held up a massive bighead carp, smiling softly at the camera.

I waited a week.

No like, no comment from Harrison.

But he hadn’t posted anything either.

Safe bet he hadn’t caught anything that week.

The second week, I posted again—same carp, same spot, only this one was even bigger, a solid four to five pounds easy.

Third week, I posted again.

Then I put on a face mask and called it a night.

When I opened my phone the next morning, among dozens of likes, I saw the one I’d been waiting for.

When we met up next, Harrison was way more talkative.

His dark hair fell soft over his forehead, no hair gel holding it in place like usual.

When he talked about something he cared about, his eyes went a little wider, bright.

Gone was the cold, aloof heir from the finance pages.

He just looked like a regular guy in his early twenties, still soft around the edges like a college guy.

I nodded.

“You’ll see when we get there. I’ve never left that spot empty-handed.”

Truth was, I didn’t know the first thing about fishing.

I’d crammed every tutorial I could find these past weeks, all to reel in Harrison—the real fish I was after.

I’d asked around dozens of people first, then hiked the mountains every day until I stumbled on this spot myself.

I ignored his comment at first.

I posted another pic the next day, then finally replied slow and casual:

He replied instantly:

I put my phone down and ate dinner.
