Before Our Divorce I Discovered My Husband Had Loved Me All Along Chapter 09

Avery’s smile flickered.

“Whatever you’re after,” I said, finishing my coffee and grabbing my bag, “it’s not for my benefit.

All this talk-you’re just trying to convince yourself.”

I stood. “Because you’re not that confident in your own relationship either.”

I turned and walked out.

Behind me, her voice rose, “I am confident! It was my fault we broke up, and Ethan says he doesn’t blame me don’t you get it?”

The breeze hit me, and my thoughts scattered. But beneath all my assumptions, something felt off.

I drove to Sunny Meadows to see Grandpa.

He’d built his fortune from nothing, retired young, and chose to live in a retirement community- away from the noise, with only his chess and his birds.

He was already waiting for me. “Ethan told me you asked for a divorce.”

I didn’t know what to say. “Grandpa, I’m sorry.”

“Silly girl.” He smiled. “I know you. Ethan has his issues-it’s not on you.”

I shook my head. “I was greedy.”

He patted my shoulder. “I shouldn’t have pushed you two together. You always came to play chess with me out of kindness. Ethan never cared for chess-but yesterday, he sat with me the whole day.

Asked me what to do.”

I buried my face in my collar. “But Grandpa-the one he loves is back.”

He was quiet for a long moment. Then, “When they broke up, his parents wrote her a check-fifty

thousand-to walk away and start over somewhere else. She came from nothing, so she took it.

Ethan didn’t fight her on it. He was wrecked for a long time-I won’t sugarcoat that.”

“But it’s been eight years, Maya. You really think if he wanted her back, he’d need more than a plane ticket? You two ended up together because he chose to-not just because I nudged him.”

“And how do you think you got past his parents? I didn’t lift a finger for that.”

I looked up, stunned.

I rarely saw his parents except on holidays. They were always neutral-never warm, never cold.

Grandpa took my hand. “I know my grandson. He’s stubborn. Don’t let one blind spot fool you. You

two should really talk-honestly.”
