I Told My Domineering Husband I Never Enjoyed It Chapter 05

“…Seren?” A hesitant voice called my name.

I looked up and met a pair of surprised eyes.

I stumbled over my words.

“Oh… hey. It’s been a while.”

Kellan Shaw laughed. “You just started at my company, right?”

“I’ve been out of the country for a while. Just got back-and here you are. Small world.”

I scratched my cheek.

“Yeah.”

He looked at me for a moment.

“So what made you decide to start working all of a sudden? I thought your husband…”

He carefully chose his words.

Back when Rhys and I got married, our wedding had been the talk of Hartwell.

Of course Kellan remembered.

I forced a smile. “Not for much longer.”

He blinked.

I repeated it calmly.

“I’m saying I’m about to not have a husband anymore.”

I wasn’t wishing Rhys dead.

I was just stating the fact that we’d be getting divorced.

Kellan stared at me, speechless.

I followed his gaze and turned around.

Rhys stood a few steps behind me, a wineglass still in his hand.

His suit was as immaculate as ever, though the top button of his collar had been loosened.

His dark eyes swept over me, then briefly landed on Kellan before moving away. Cold. Unreadable.

Did he seriously know how to sneak up on people without making a sound?

I stepped back on instinct. My shoulder bumped into Kellan’s arm.

He caught me by reflex, then immediately let go.

“Mr. Hollister.” Kellan greeted him politely. “I’ve heard a lot about you.”

Rhys didn’t even look at him.

Instead, his eyes settled on me.

That look. The same quiet scrutiny he’d give me whenever he caught me zoning out during homework, or when I hadn’t finished an assignment.

The noise around us seemed to disappear.

My heartbeat grew louder. My palms were damp.

“Well, I’ll leave you two to talk,” I said with a strained smile. “I was just about to meet a friend.”

I turned to go, but before I could get far, a hand closed around my wrist.

Rhys’s fingers were warm, the calluses on his fingertips brushing against my skin. He met my eyes.

“I’m done talking.” His voice stayed calm. “I’ll go with you.”

I stiffened.

Kellan looked between the two of us. Then he smiled knowingly.

“I’ll leave you two to it.”

He nodded at me.

“See you at the office, Seren.”

The instant he said my name, Rhys’s grip tightened.

Once Kellan disappeared into the crowd, I tried pulling my hand free. It didn’t move.

“What do you mean?” Rhys’s voice was low.

I looked back at him.

“You heard me. We’re getting div—”

“Mr. Hollister!” A hurried voice cut me off.

A middle-aged man strode over.

He nodded politely at me.

“Mrs. Hollister.”

Then he turned to Rhys.

“Mr. Hollister, Miss Bennett seems to be having some trouble over there. Quite a few guests have. gathered to watch…”

The comments instantly exploded.

[It’s happening! This’s the classic knight-in-shining-armor moment!]

[Go already! Our strong, fearless FL is about to get a drink thrown in her face!]

[I just know tonight’s going to be a huge turning point for them.]

[Seren, take the hint and move! Don’t ruin the iconic scene!]

I instinctively looked at Rhys.

His eyes shifted away from me toward the direction the man had pointed.

His fingers slowly loosened around my wrist.

Then he took a step away.

I let out a cold laugh.

“Weren’t you going to come with me? Or did you change your mind already?”

His brows drew together slightly.

“I’ll come find you after the gala.”

I stood there without moving.

I watched his tall figure cut through the crowd… straight toward the girl at the center of it all.

A moment later, I heard his deep voice from across the ballroom. “Miss Bennett.”

The crowd quietly parted.

Maren Bennett looked up.

The surprise and gratitude in her bright eyes appeared at exactly the right moment.

They really did look perfect together.

People nearby began whispering.

“Who’s that?”

“I heard she’s an intern at Kellan’s company.”

“Really? Then what’s her relationship with Mr. Hollister? Doesn’t look like just business to me.”

“Hey, don’t start rumors. Mr. and Mrs. Hollister are rock solid. It’s probably just business.”

“Yeah, that makes more sense.”

Those last two comments only came after they noticed I was standing nearby.

I quietly listened.

Not far away, Rhys simply stood beside Maren.

That alone was enough. The hostility around her melted away.

Even the people who’d been giving her trouble immediately changed their attitude, insisting it had

all been a misunderstanding.

The comments continued scrolling.

[OMG the ML and FL look absolutely stunning together.]

[Standing in front of everyone to shield her from all the cruelty… I’m obsessed.]

[The female supporting role looks so pitiful standing there alone.]

[And this is what you get for being a total doormat. Just standing there taking it.]

[She’d better not keep chasing the ML later. She loves him way too much.]

Rhys stood beside Maren with his usual effortless composure.

But somehow, there was warmth in his eyes now.

I let out a cold laugh.

Keep chasing him? Why would I?

I’d finally realized something.

Rhys and I were never right for each other. And I’d never once had a place in his heart.

I didn’t wait for the gala to end. I just left.

As for Rhys’s promise to find me afterward?

Please. Like I’d actually fall for that.

Only an idiot would’ve waited.
