I lay in the soft bed.

The spot beside me had already gone cold.

Rhys had gone to his study to finish some work.

The more I read, the more awake I became.

Meanwhile, my grades were awful. He’d been tutoring me since we were kids.

Whenever I zoned out, he’d smack my palm with a ruler.

To me, he’d always been like my brother. My teacher.

Even after he became my husband, part of me was still scared of him.

But there was no denying how brilliant he was.

After taking over the family conglomerate, he’d run it with cold, ruthless efficiency.

So somewhere along the way, obeying him had just become second nature.

The next morning, I dragged myself downstairs, dark circles rimming my eyes.

The chef had already prepared an elaborate breakfast.

Rhys was dressed in a perfectly tailored suit, eating quietly at the table.

The chef blinked in surprise.

“Mrs. Hollister! You’re… up early.”

I waved him off.

“Just throw something together. Doesn’t matter.”

I usually slept until noon and skipped breakfast altogether.

Rhys was always the only one who ate it. No wonder the chef looked shocked.

Rhys set down his knife and fork. His dark eyes lifted to me.

I just didn’t have it in me.

Normally, I’d have flashed him a smile and chirped, “Morning, honey.”

But today? I couldn’t fake it.

“Heading in? First day?”

He was the one who broke the silence.

“Yeah.” I said.
