The Day I Left He Proposed But I No Longer Wanted Marriage Chapter 05

“Miss? Miss!”

I jolted awake and met the driver’s worried gaze.

“I’ve been circling downtown two or three times already. Where exactly are you trying to go?”

I opened my mouth, then realized I had absolutely nowhere to go.

Three years ago, my mother was gravely ill and dying.

I wanted to come back to see her one last time, but my advisor refused to approve leave, citing academic obligations. I had no choice but to secretly buy a plane ticket and fly home.

But before I could even step out of the airport, bodyguards sent by the Harrison family grabbed me and forced me onto a plane back to Switzerland.

That day, I sobbed my heart out in the departure lounge. I called Evan dozens and dozens of times.

But not a single call went through.

Later I learned that day was Claire’s birthday.

He’d been on a luxury yacht in Paris, setting off fireworks for her all night long.

Because of this, my father and sister hated me to the core, and I had no face left to contact them.

“Driver, take me to Riverside Heights.”

That was the home Evan and I shared here.

Since we were breaking up, I ought to leave cleanly, with nothing left behind.

The door code was my birthday.

Everything inside was exactly the same as when I’d left six years ago.

In the entryway sat our matching couple’s mugs from back then.

On the wall hung a simple sketch—a doodle I’d casually drawn of the two of us.

Evan had protected that scrap of paper flawlessly—not a single crease anywhere.

I forced myself to pull my gaze away and walked softly toward the bedroom.

But passing the study, I heard Evan’s voice.

I wasn’t trying to eavesdrop—his voice was simply far too loud.

“Assistant Leo, next month is Aria’s birthday. I’m planning to propose to her that day. Start preparing immediately—I want the entire venue covered in her favorite white roses.”

Hearing those words, that heart of mine, long numb and dead, still couldn’t stop a sharp, uncontrollable pang of pain.

The thing I’d waited six years for.

Now, just as I was about to leave, it had come.

“But Claire is going to South Africa next week to look at jewelry. I don’t feel comfortable letting her go alone. If Aria asks, just tell her I had to go abroad on short notice for business, and have her wait for me at home and not worry.”
