The Day I Left He Proposed But I No Longer Wanted Marriage Chapter 02

I walked out of the airport and went straight to the launch event.

I wanted to see it with my own eyes, so I could finally let my heart die for good.

At the openair venue, Evan was carefully adjusting a crooked necklace for Claire.

Every gesture between them carried an intimacy that no outsider could ever penetrate.

As if sensing something, Evan swept his gaze across the crowd.

And finally, it landed precisely on me.

Surprise flickered through his eyes.

The next second, he walked directly toward me.

I stood frozen in place, my whole body rigid.

I thought, if the first words out of his mouth are blaming me for secretly coming back, then I won’t bother saving his face—I’ll break up with him right here, in front of everyone.

But instead, he pulled me hard into his arms.

“Why didn’t you tell me you were coming back? You’ve lost so much weight.”

His warm breath spilled against my neck.

My tears nearly burst from my eyes.

Once I was in the car, I cursed myself for having no backbone.

Why was it that the moment Evan showed me the tiniest scrap of favor, the smallest hint of tenderness, I turned right back into that fool throwing herself into the flame?

The car had barely driven off when Claire called.

“Evan, why did you suddenly leave? The celebration dinner is about to start.”

Evan turned his head to glance at me and explained in a low voice.

“Aria’s back. I want to be with her first.”

Claire’s laugh came through the other end.

“Aria’s back! Then just bring her straight to the dinner. We haven’t seen each other in ages—it’ll be perfect, we can all catch up!”

Evan hesitated a moment and tilted his head toward me.

His eyes held a silent question.

The words slipped out.

“I want to go home. I’m tired.”

But Evan clearly heard what I said. He just chose to ignore it.

He turned the wheel, changed direction, and drove straight toward the dinner.

I turned my head to the window and said nothing more.

Six years. I should have known long ago.

My feelings would never outweigh a single word from Claire.
