I Took a Late Night Driving Job and Found My Ex Waiting Chapter 06

He gave me ten thousand, which was exactly what I needed for the hospice admission fee. But when I checked the balance at the ATM, I saw it was half a million.

I rushed back to the hospital and found Olivia in the hallway. “This—this is four hundred and ninety thousand.” I pressed the card into her hand. “I asked for ten. There’s too much in here.”

Olivia stared at the card and laughed coldly. “Generous as always.”

I fidgeted.

“Take it. That kind of money means nothing to him.” She turned away dismissively.

“Wait!” I shoved the card back. “Ten is enough. That’s all I need. Olivia… thank you.”

“Emily!” She grabbed my arm and snatched at the papers in my hand.

“Wait!”

“Give it!”

“Olivia!”

A sick person can’t outmatch a healthy one. The papers tore in half—one for her, one for me.

On her half, the words HOSPICE CARE stood out in bold at the top.

“Hospice?” She frowned, her voice dropping to a whisper. “You’re going into hospice?”

“Nothing.”

“Didn’t they say it was just your stomach?!”

She grabbed my wrist. This hospital was new to me; they didn’t have my full history yet. And since I’d been eating poorly, they’d naturally flagged gastric issues first.

My voice shook. “Please don’t…”

“Emily…” Olivia stared at me in disbelief. “Don’t tell me you broke up with Nathan and cut me off for some other reason.”

I couldn’t speak.

“Cancer?”

I shook my head.

“ALS?”

“Leukemia…”

Olivia froze. Then her voice cracked. “Don’t tell me you did all of that—leaving Nathan, leaving me—because of this…”

“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry…” Tears streamed down my face.

She looked at me, and her own tears fell to the floor. She wiped her eyes. “How much?”

“Ten thousand.”

“No—I mean to treat this. How much does it cost?”

I shook my head hard. “It’s too late. There’s no time.”

“How could it be too late?!” Her voice trembled. “I’m a CEO now too—how is it too late?”

I looked up. “I never found a bone marrow match. I don’t have time left.”

Olivia stared at me, red-eyed. She turned away, wiped her tears, and said fiercely, “Then we wait. Another one will come.”

I shook my head. “I only got one match in three years. And by the time it came, it was too late.”

“We’ll treat it.” She grabbed me by the arm. “I’m not leaving. I’m going to help you get treated. Hospice? Not while I’m here. I won’t give up.”

“Olivia!”

“Don’t argue!”

Olivia choked on her words. “Am I supposed to just watch my best friend die?”

Seeing her like that, I managed a weak smile. This was exactly why I’d left Olivia too—not just Nathan. I knew what she was like. Their family’s money shouldn’t have been wasted on me.

“Okay,” I said. “But promise me you won’t tell Nathan.”

Olivia blinked. “Why?”
