He Faked His Death for My Trust Fund. So I Planned My Own Goodbye. Chapter 04

I watched them walk arm-in-arm into The Marlowe Hotel.

I didn’t follow. I went straight back to Halcyon Private Clinic.

That evening around eight, Camille showed up like always, carrying fruit.

“Mina, didn’t you sleep well? You look awful. You’ve been spacing out.”

Unlike her usual tired look, her face was glowing, like she’d just had a facial.

She smiled and pulled out the desserts.

“Look, your favorites, macarons and strawberry shortcake. I waited in line for two hours.”

“And this new medication I got from the doctor. It’s expensive, but as long as I have money, I’ll never let you run out.”

I watched her calmly, saying nothing.

When she handed me the pills, I grabbed her wrist.

“What kind of medicine is this?”

Camille’s eyes flashed with panic.

“Mina, what’s wrong? Why are you asking? These are the targeted therapy pills you always take for your stomach cancer.”

I smiled.

“Nothing. I just feel bad that they’re so expensive and you’re spending so much on me.”

Camille’s eyes immediately reddened.

“Mina, how can you say that? We’re best friends.”

“I’d spend every last cent I have to help you get better.”

My smile didn’t reach my eyes.

“It’s good to have you.”

But I’d already had Tessa take the pills to a doctor for testing.

They were counterfeit.

The ingredients caused weakness, nausea, weight loss, and abnormal lab results.

It made it look like my condition was steadily worsening.

At first I didn’t believe it.

I used my own savings to hire a private investigator.

Two hours later, a video landed in my hands.

In it, Julian and Camille were talking.

“Does Mina really believe I’m dead?”

“Of course. The whole setup was flawless.”

“She thought she was sick, so she broke up with you and said she was going to Paris.”

“The funny part is she had no idea the diagnosis was fake.”

“This whole plan started a year ago so you could get your hands on her Grandpa Everett’s trust fund.”

Julian gave a cold laugh.

“She found out she was sick and her first thought was to break up with me. Guess I read her right.”

“Since she really did love me…”

“Once we get the trust fund, I’ll tell her she’s been cured and let her obediently come back to me.”

I stared at Julian’s confident face in the video and laughed out loud.

The man I’d loved with every fiber of my being…

Was this kind of person.

Camille had gotten close to me because they believed that once I “died” of cancer, no one would be able to stop them from taking Grandpa Everett’s trust fund.

They’d been waiting for me to voluntarily transfer beneficiary rights to her.

They wanted me to think I had stomach cancer?

Since they wanted me “dead,” I’d follow their script to the end.

Too bad.

They wouldn’t get a single thing they wanted.

The next day, as I was preparing to discharge, Tessa rushed over, voice low.

“Mina, you’ve been tricked.”

“You don’t have cancer at all.”

“Halcyon Private Clinic belongs to Lane Medical Group. The medication they gave you is messed up.”

“Stop falling for it. Get out of here.”

I just smiled faintly.

“I know. Thanks, Tessa.”

Then I took out my phone and called Camille.

“Cami, I don’t have much time left.”

“I want to transfer Grandpa Everett’s trust fund to you.”

“Meet me at The Copper Kettle Café tomorrow at two in the afternoon.”

While they were celebrating that the plan was almost complete…

Camille sat waiting at the café we’d agreed on.

The sun kept sliding westward.

For the fifth time, she checked her watch, frowning.

“Wasn’t it supposed to be two o’clock? It’s almost five. Why isn’t she here?”

Then Camille got a call from the clinic.

“Is this Miss Camille Lane?”

“You’re Mina Caldwell’s emergency contact. We could only reach you.”

“She went missing after falling into the sea at Greyhaven Pier.”
