I Was Keeping Her Alive While Her Fiancé Tried to Destroy Me Chapter 05

All I could see was Clara’s face. The girl who had called me Julian.

“Please. Don’t break the totem.”

“Sure. I won’t touch it. First, you’re going to get on your knees right there, look into this camera, and confess you’re a fraud who scammed the Bennett family.”

My jaw tightened.

“Fine. I’ll say it.”

Preston smirked and held up his phone, camera already recording.

“Go ahead.”

I lowered myself onto my knees. Every word tasted like blood in my mouth.

“I, Julian, confess that I’m a fake. I used cheap tricks to scam the Bennett family out of their money.”

Preston pocketed the phone, looking satisfied.

I didn’t take my eyes off his face.

“Give it back.”

Preston tilted his head as if he were actually considering it.

“Not yet. You’re going to kiss my boots first.”

The rage inside me burned white-hot. But Clara was dying. Every second I wasted here was one Clara didn’t have.

“Fine. I’ll do it. But you keep your promise.”

I dropped my head and dragged myself to his feet.

“Now give me the…”

Something wooden clattered against the dirt in front of me.

I froze. The totem lay on the ground, broken cleanly in half.

The last thread of Clara’s presence, the faintest trace I’d been clinging to, snuffed out.

Everything inside me went still. Then it burned.

“PRESTON!”

He was laughing.

“You idiot. I already broke that thing. I just wanted to see how far you’d take it.”

“And you actually did it. You really thought I was going to give it back? Come on.”

I threw myself at him. The bodyguards caught me before I got close and slammed me back down.

Preston looked down at me like I was trash left on the curb.

“I’m bored. Dump him in the woods. Let the coyotes have him.”

The bodyguards hauled me up, barely conscious, legs dragging, and carried me deeper into the pines.

Then the sky split open under the roar of helicopter blades.

A voice thundered over a loudspeaker from the open door.

“You’re the one who should be left to the coyotes!”
