I Was Keeping Her Alive While Her Fiancé Tried to Destroy Me Chapter 01

I was born with an extra piece to my soul. Dark energy couldn’t touch me. I’d never been sick a day in my life.

The day I turned eighteen, the Bennetts came for me. I became their daughter Clara Bennett’s shadow, bound to stay within thirty feet of her, every hour of every day.

Clara had been born with a shattered soul. The spiritual guru the Bennetts brought in said my extra piece could patch the void, but only if I stayed close enough.

There was one condition: the psychic tether between us couldn’t be broken. If it was severed, Clara would die. Fast.

Six months ago, a conference driver took a wrong turn with me in the car. Clara collapsed on the spot. Her heart stopped before anyone could reach her.

That same day, the Bennetts destroyed the company responsible. They were bankrupt within a week.

After that, anytime Clara and I traveled in separate cars, both vehicles were fitted with military-grade GPS trackers.

They gave me my own driver whose only job was to stay in contact with hers and report the distance between us, mile by mile.

That system worked. Until Clara’s fiancé, Preston Sterling, returned from overseas.

He insisted on riding with me to a conference Clara was attending. Halfway there, he ripped the GPS tracker out of the dashboard and ordered my driver to take a detour.

I caught his smirk in the rearview mirror.

“So Clara can’t be more than thirty feet from you, huh? Convenient bullshit. You really think I’d buy that? You’re a nobody trying to leech off her wealth. I’m the only one who belongs next to her.”

“I’ve already brought in a real spiritual expert from Europe. You might’ve conned the Bennetts, but you’re not playing me.”

I lunged for the wheel, but his bodyguards shoved me back against the seat. The car kept going, deeper into Blackwood Pines.

Miles away, at the conference venue, Clara’s pulse started to fail.

…

I clenched my jaw. I’d agreed to be Clara’s shadow for one reason: the Bennetts had promised to pay for the best specialists in the country to treat my mom.

My extra piece had latched onto Clara’s soul, filling in the void she was born with.

But the car was heading the wrong way, and I could feel it. The spiritual tether between us was stretching thinner with every mile. Pieces of it were already snapping back into me.

Clara was fading. If the whole bond snapped, she’d be dead within minutes.

I swallowed the panic rising in my throat and kept my voice steady.

“You’ve got it all wrong. I don’t want their money. I took this deal because they’re paying for my mom’s medical bills. That’s it.”

But Preston just sneered. “Cut the crap. I don’t know what kind of voodoo scam you’re pulling, but you’ve got that whole family eating out of your hand.”

“Well, I’m back now. And as her fiancé, getting you out of her life is at the top of my list.”

“I’m going to be the one running the Bennett family someday. And I’m not letting some parasite bleed them dry.”

“And if you think you can keep playing house with my fiancée, think again.”

The driver glanced back at Preston, his knuckles white on the wheel. “Mr. Sterling, he’s not lying! If we get too far from Ms. Bennett, she’ll die.”

“We need to turn around right now. There’s still time!”

Preston pressed a blade to the driver’s ribs. “I’m calling the shots now. Shut up and drive.”

The driver’s mouth snapped shut.

Then the alarm on the driver’s belt screamed to life.

[SAFE DISTANCE EXCEEDED. 3,000 METERS. REDUCE DISTANCE IMMEDIATELY.]

[WARNING!! WARNING!!]

The Bennetts had issued the alarm to both drivers, a failsafe on top of the GPS.

Preston ripped the alarm off the driver’s belt and hurled it out the window.

It shattered against a boulder on the roadside. “What the hell is that thing? It was giving me a fucking headache.”

The driver stared straight ahead, jaw clamped tight, hands trembling on the wheel.

I fixed my eyes on Preston. “Last warning. Turn this car around. Or whatever happens next is on your head.”
