I Came Back As A Zombie And They Wanted My Kidney Chapter 02

The kidney transplant never went ahead—I’d dug in my heels and refused to comply.

They sent me straight back to the Holloway Estate and ordered the maids not to leave me any food, thinking hunger would force me to cave.

Fine by me. Human food tasted like cardboard, and eating too much only made my internal organs decompose faster.

I just chewed the priest’s stabilizer pills at night.

But Seraphina wasn’t done with me yet. She had a nasty little trap planned.

The next afternoon, I stood at the end of the second-floor hallway, soaking up sunlight, trying to chase away a faint unpleasant odor clung to my skin no perfume could fully mask.

Sera walked over with a glass of warm milk.

“Still mad at me?”

She lowered her voice. “You think refusing the transplant keeps you in this family?”

“Mom and Dad and Dash? They’re mine. You’re nothing but a braindead stand-in.”

I stared at her. Took forever to process.

“Oh.”

My total deadpan reaction sent her over the edge.

She glanced toward the staircase, then dumped the scalding hot milk all over her front.

Screamed. Threw herself backward. Tumbled down the steps.

“Why did you push me!”

Her shrill scream sliced through the quiet of the whole house.

I watched her roll. My brain glitched and seized up again, like it always did.

When she hit the bottom and went still, I slowly lifted my right hand, hovering it stiffly in midair.

“Oh. Watch out.”

Dash stormed out of his study, eyes blazing red with rage, just in time to catch me with my hand still raised.

He flew down the stairs, and scooped Sera into his arms.

“Sera! Sera, wake up!”

Eleanor came sprinting over and nearly fainted at the sight.

“What have you done?!”

Dash looked up at me, hate burning in his eyes.

“You’re an animal, Wren!”

“She wasn’t even asking for your kidney anymore, and you still tried to kill her!”

I lowered my hand. Stared back.

“I didn’t push her.”

“She fell on her own.”

Eleanor pointed a trembling finger right in my face, shouting furious accusations.

“Liar! I saw you reach for her!”

“You monster! How did our family produce something like you?”

Monster?

I looked down at my hands. The nails were going blue-black at the edges.

My thirty-day shelf life was running out. My body was deteriorating fast—my joints were stiffening, and a faint stench of rot seeped out that no perfume could fully mask.

Maybe I was a monster.

But I couldn’t let them find out.

I doused myself in perfume—an entire bottle, doused myself heavily in the bottle’s contents.

Dash carried Seraphina past me, pinching his nose in disgust.

“God, how much perfume did you use? You smell like a chemical spill.”

“Get back to your room. Now. Stop stinking up the whole place.”

I shrugged indifferently and turned to head back to my room.

I needed to call the priest.

I needed more pills.

Otherwise I’d rot away completely before the final payment came through.
